http://www.skikey.com/ How many mountains that you ski are equipped with ski key? Belleayre mountain seems safe but we still lock up there. My nephew lost his two week old skis and bindings last season in the Poconos because he did not secure even as he had a lock in his jacket. Our home mountain has them , they work great. . Mountain creek (where I will not go) Camelback(once a year) are all unsafe with out using locks. Plattekill is one of the few places my equipment feels safe. Got the ski keys for 18 dollars last season. How safe are the Adirondack and Catskill ski mountain ski areas?

WF and Gore are safe
Killington not so much Leaving your skis at Hunter unlocked is like leaving your car running in the Bronx with the keys in it and doors open

I haven't heard too many stories of equipment disappearing at Whiteface. It occasionally happens, but I think as a general rule, it's pretty rare. The only time I ever think about locking my equipment up is on the busy holiday weekends, when there are more "visitors" than usual.
I always leave my bag in the lodge cafeteria and have never had a problem (knock wood)! That ski key looks pretty cool though ... nice and small and you don't have to mess around with routing cables through your skis, etc. I think Whiteface has one of those racks near the base lodge ... I never understood what it was (how it locked). Now that I know, I may have to pick up a few of those locks, just to be safe!

I am pretty sure Hunter has a free ski check. I ski Hunter and I just separate my skis - which I do at Gore, WF, Stratton and wherever else I ski. I have never had a problem. I know skis are stolen so why make it easy. |
i usually kick my skis off at the base of a lift. then just walk to the lodge..
only thieves and thugs ski at hunter.. keep thinking that

I know quite a few people who had their gear stolen from Whiteface. I heard from one person who had their gear stolen TWICE that the guy who stole it got caught. The guys house was LOADED with stolen equipment. I haven't heard of any problems at Gore, but I tend to leave my stuff in pretty strategic places. |

As someone who grew up in the Bronx, I can assure you that this is not a good idea. Because I grew up in the Bronx, I always lock my skis no matter where I'm skiing or how long I'll be gone. I even lock my kayak rack to the car in the High Peaks. Why worry about it?

gore was pretty bad a few years ago. my dads skis were stolen and we had atleast 6 people come into our shop reporting stolen skis. last year i think i only heard of one stolen snowboard. i usually bring my skis in the lodge and stick them in a corner....but where i sit kinda helps so people dont usually complain. also seperating is always good. just make sure one ski has the top sheet facing out and the other has the base facing out.

Went to Mountain Creek on a Sunday afternoon in 2006, when while helping friends with lift tickets , saw my skis walking away.I ran fast caught up to lady and took them back.Thats when I decided to use a lock or ski check. Now that I have a ski key securing is so simple! If only every ski area utilized them.
