Solar eclipse 2017

Brownski
My first top ten list. What do you think?

Also, of course, hoping for some good eclipse stories...

What kind of top ten list only has seven entries?

Safe viewing everyone.

8.  Set Siri up to voice dial 911 so that at 2:30am, when your eclipse blindness sets in, you can get help!

I feel like my expectations were too low to claim it was a letdown but still... that's it? It barely got any darker

It got dark in Nebraska right before totality. It was the most meaningful moment of my life and my soul feels free for the first time.

Looks like Tug Hill is in the Wheelhouse for 2024 and I'm going to be there you can write it down.

I think Whiteface will be within the path too.  I don't know where I'll live at that time, but I'll try and make a trip up there just to see it from the summit.
I've lived in New York my entire life.

Ok. The eclipse is over. You can go back to being afraid of statues now.

I was as sick of hearing about the eclipse as I was leading up to the "millennium."  Actually, non-millennium since the millennium began January 2001.  But hey, mm, I don't mean to rain on your parade.  If it was dark where I was yesterday, maybe I'd feel differently.

I thought I might have sensed a wee bit of sarcasm in mm's observation.  While I agree the whole experience was a bit underwhelming here in NY, I'm sure totality was much cooler.....and it's hard to entirely discount a celestial event that has only happened a handful of times in my lifetime (so far), one that we haven't seen in nearly a quarter century, and one that many of us will only have a couple more chances to see before we return to dust.  In the cosmic scheme it was kind of cool to take in, as underwhelming as this one was.

The totality was cool, and way better than even a 99% eclipse.  I didn't see the diamond ring or Bailey's Beads, or any stars, so it was a little disappointing.  Probably the high thin clouds in Nebraska obscured all that, but the corona was cool.  It was still worth driving 250 miles to see.

I'll probably head for Jay Peak or Stowe for the next one, but I think a dry desert would be the  best place to see an eclipse.  New England probably always has too much moisture in the air that diffuses the light of the corona and obscures the stars.

That was a whole lot of hype for a whole lot of meh but we weren't in the path of totality either.
