So... without the shovel and probe, how would you assist in a companion rescue scenario?  or are you going out thinking... "That'll never happen to me?"

in harveys trip report of the slides the whiteface tour guide has no backpack on. the ski patrol does not either. are there shovel and probes in there utility belts?

There are 2 different status for the Slides, info on the website.

Saturday they were Gold status, no avy gear required.

With new fallen and wind loaded snow they were Silver status Sunday, beacon, shovel and probe required.  Patrol made sure the guy I got first tracks with Sunday had a shovel.

They were Gold yesterday.  With new snow I'd wanna have beacon/shovel/probe with me tomorrow and Sat.  Better to have it and not need it than to get shut out because you don't.

Was at Mad River Glen today. Other than maybe a tiny bit of drizzle in the morning, elevations above 2500 saw no rain. Snowed steadily all day, I would guess there were maybe 3 inches on the ground by the time the lifts stopped spinning. Although it did rain fairly steadily at lower elevations all day, the snow line was rapidly getting lower past 2:00.

If those shots were taken on a day when avy gear was required to get through the gate, I guess I would ask them the same question.  If someone gets buried, and you don't have a shovel and probe, how are you going assist in the effort to dig them out?  

Do the people in the group without rescue tools stand and watch while the people with the shovels and probes do all of the work?   Seriously.  Better safe than sorry.  The effectiveness of your beacon is greatly diminished unless everyone in the group is carrying all of the tools necessary to perform a rescue.

As JTG stated no avy gear was required in the Slides on Saturday when I skied Whiteface.  I chose that day because I had an idea that the slides status would be Gold, meaning no gear required.

Whiteface reporting 5" at the summit today......

Coming down hard on the northway back from Albany tonight.  A few cars off the road.  Even the lower elevation mountains are doing well with this.  Might have to do Hickory Sunday.  

hickory is not opening until 11 AM sunday. $30 lift tickets. i will be there
