My guess is that Tomcat is right. The new CRV (it's a 2012 our third) is much better up our steep drive in winter than our 1998 or 2006. The newer model is FULL TIME 4WD at speeds under 5mph. You don't have to have any "slip" to engage all four. Unlike the early models it is balky at slow speeds with tight turns. A totally worthwhile trade for me.
Subies are ALWAYS in 4WD so it makes sense they would react similarly.
