Subaru tire squeal when turning tight

I wouldn't describe it as tire squeal but you can here the AWD when driving slowly with the wheel cut - at least with the audis and subi's i've owned.

Have you checked the air pressure?  If it is low it will cause squealing.  May be slow down a bit as well?

If you haven't taken the winter air out of your tires and replaced it with the summer air that will cause a squeal for sure.

No it does it all the time, even when the wheel is not full to lock, air pressure at mfg specs, going quite slow. Don't know if I noticed it in the winter (windows closed all the time).

Could it be the awd mechsnism working to keep the wheels rorating at the different speeds?  In a thght turn the outside wheels travel a lot farther.Tom

My guess is that Tomcat is right.  The new CRV (it's a 2012 our third) is much better up our steep drive in winter than our 1998 or 2006. The newer model is FULL TIME 4WD at speeds under 5mph. You don't have to have any "slip" to engage all four.  Unlike the early models it is balky at slow speeds with tight turns. A totally worthwhile trade for me.

Subies are ALWAYS in 4WD so it makes sense they would react similarly.

If it feels choppy (and it's automatic trans) could be MPT clutch wearing out.  It's the part of the trans that allows for different wheel speeds as they turn differently inside\outside turn...

AWD, not true 4WD. That should eliminate the "crab walk" theory, too. AFAIK, the symmetrical AWD means the same power delivered to the front and rear axles, whereas some cars favor the front or rear. AWD is the axle being an open diff, so the inside and outside wheels turn at different rates.

Someone correct me if I'm out of line here..

OK  ----  Subies will crab walk if the transfer clutch in the front dif is starting to go. You'll know it when turgning in a tight circle. Subies Symmetrical AWD system is symmetrical because all the drive shafts are the same length which delivers the power equal to the wheels.

I don't doubt this statement, but I don't see how the length of the drive shaft to the wheel factors into the amount of torque or power the wheel receives. It's a solid shaft - the torque transfer is the same independent of the length. What am I missing here? Now I can see that there is a weight distribution difference that would cause some added instability in the vehicle.
