Had Three Saab turbos , never had any problems with any of them . Fun  cars to drive  . Was religious about scheduled maintenance .

I thought PeeTex was saying the turbo itself, not the motor, was unreliable.

I've been going for regular oil changes but I have no idea about coolant. Are you talking about the radiator or does the turbo have it's own coolant?
Actually talking about the whole package. A turbo is another mechanical part to fail. The turbo puts extra stresses on the engine as it is boosting the output power up so everything works harder. Yes it is important to be regular on all service and that will make a motor last a long time. However you just can’t tell me that a turbo engine will last the same on average as a non turbo. That defies any logic as just the failure rate of a turbo will decrease the life of the overall package.

However with that said, I may end up with one on my next purchase.

I'm hoping that driving style matters. I've probably really gotten into the turbo less than 20 times in 18 months. I don't push it hard. The car doesn't have a boost gauge, so you drive it normally. It sips gas, but can GO when you need it.

Plus every Honda I have ever owned, I sold to a dealer with a cherry motor and a rusting undercarriage.  So the motor is never the worn out part. Honda motors are sweet.

I don't blame the car for the rust, it's my driving style.

The next problem is that I’m gonna need a third car now. My original idea was a compact regular cab pickup as a way to sort of keep him out of trouble

I meant to tell you, I recently priced out car insurance. I had Geico and ended up going with Merchant's. Went from $240/mo to $148 or so. That's full coverage on a 4runner and my truck with 300k/100k and a $1000 deductible.  My bank does this thing where they price out 4 or 5 companies for you. I called my old agent and ended up going with her though. Hope that helps.

Agree - motors from the major brands seem to last a lot longer. You were not driving in the 60s and 70s when a motor or tranny was a 100k miles or less item. With the wide scale use of precision machining, better lubricants and advanced coatings and hardening this improved dramatically doubling if not tripling the life.

My wife got a price from Geico that’s almost what we’re paying now.
The Tacoma was my first thought as well- maybe an older Colorado or ranger or a frontier if I move away from my two door idea

I just remembered about that massive Tacoma recall. Don’t know whether to be upset at such a massive F-up or impressed that they’re actually replacing thousands and thousands of frames...

I don’t know a whole lot about this stuff......but when we added my daughter our agent “assigned” her to the shittiest vehicle we had with the least coverage.  Not sure if that will help, but it can’t hurt to ask, make sure they aren’t putting your son as the primary driver on the best vehicle.

My satirical blog post is biting me in the ass. My wife is completely sold on the idea of buying a brand new Kia Rio Sport instead of something used with lots of miles already on it. There really is merit to the idea. I think my wife would mostly drive the Kia and I would have to decide whether I set junior loose in a Honda Pilot or my Colorado. Then in a year we send junior to college with the Kia and I trade in my truck for something cool.

I have the older style Colorado. It’s pretty plain vanilla.

I was eyeing a new Range Rover or a Toyota Land Cruiser but I just can’t see the price tag. I’m now thinking about an Exploder.

Not sure where my head will be at by the time it arrives but the bronco is supposed to return soon. I always liked the old full sized 2 doors.

Holy cow.

Still probably had a modest driving range. 12-14 mpg?
