Re: Teaching new dogs old tricks

Last week the new puppy got her first face full of Grouse ( partridge ). We got a bird one day with the older dog and I showed it to the pup and her eyes lit up. Later that day she flushed a group of 8 birds. I missed, of course, but the pup was excited by all the noise and action. The next day we went back and the older dog flushed some birds and I shot one. The pup found it first, dug it out of some tough cover and when I said " Fetch it up " she brought it right to me and put it softly in my hand. I am so proud.
I'm taking her in today to get speyed. I'm going to let a vet do it. I would do it myself but it gets so messy. She should be healed in time for Pheasant season on Oct 6th. Then I'll have some pictures

I tried doing my last dog but I think I tied something too tight because she can't bark anymore.

This photo is a little out of focus ( like me ) but this is my pup with her first pheasant. We went to North Central Montana, out in the Plains, for a couple days of hunting. We got her a skid plate for her belly and she used it. She exceded my expectations in every way. As my older dog gets older she has slowed down and now offers a good example out in the field. I understand that most of you here don't like hunting but watching good dogs work together to flush birds is one of the great things in life.

No, she didn't rough up the bird too much. I think it was the 12 gauge shotgun.

My girls had a fine day of feathers in their face. We hunted at a private ranch near Whitehall, Mt., along the banks of the Jefferson River. Tomorow is the start of Big Game season here in Montana. I hope to post a picture of me holding up the head of an elk so big that campy shits himself.

Re: Teaching new dogs old tricks

Today is the opener for big game season. And I'm home typing on an internet forum.
Actually, if I work hard, I could get the last 8 sheets of plywood on the roof, nail it off and tar paper it. It has snowed a few times already and that put me off schedule. There is a Winter Storm warning for tomorrow night and all day Monday. They are calling for 10 - 20" in the mountains with an Arctic Chill. My hopes are that the storm pushes some Elk out of the high country and down to where mortals can pack one out. Word on the street is there are a bunch of Elk hanging out in the district that I hunt.
The puppy blew out her ACL the day before bird hunting season. She had surgery ( I let the vet do this one ) and has been limited to walking on a leesh for the past 7 weeks. She is now up to trotting on a leesh. Another 3 weeks before we can let her run free. A lab puppy just doesn't understand and I fear she may explode.
When we moved this past Spring my internet world got turned upside down. I am now using dial up. It sucks. I'm not sure if I can upload a picture but if I shoot something big I'll figure it out. Or maybe a picture of the house I just built.
