I don't really know shit about the west and even less about AZ.
So this is more of a feeling than an attempt to discover any truth. Based on the approach that you take RA, I'm starting to feel like AZ is the NY of the west. Like VT is to Utah, as NY is to AZ. It just feels like it can be really good, sometimes, not as often as the big dog, but often enough to keep it interesting. And there is so much appreciation for it when the goods come. I agree with Marcksi, inspiring shots.

I have been to Flagstaff a couple of times..
I would say it's more like So Cal.. Some years the mountains outside of LA are under mountains of snow. Some years nada.. But if there is no snow.SO much fun can be had doing other outside activities..

My first edit for the season. Please watch in the HD format, thanks!

Tunes, Footage Composition... A+ Awesome!! Watched it twice. 1 for me. 1 for my wife. Thanks for posting.
Edit: The POV chase cam and POV stuff in the trees is amazing, great combination of POV and face forward wide shots. Looking forward to part 2. |
I still can't believe that's Arizona
I'm normally not a fan of GoPro crap cause it seems to always make me want to puke, but yours didn't. Maybe because it was mixed in with action shots as well. Regardless, thanks for sharing that. I feel like skiing now |
As usual, RA, well done! But personally, I'm more of a fan of still photography than video (so for selfish reasons please don't stop posting those too), for some of the reasons Camp mentioned plus some others. But, your POV is definitely smoother than most...undoubtedly due to the skiing ability of the videographer. Bravo, RA.
Were you using a chest mount for the POV? |
Thanks everyone! It's a chest cam, I find it's the easiest to use. It's the only way I can capture skiing here for the most part, we don't get a lot of snow regularly so when we do people aren't going to stand around and try to get video shots, it's go time!

It is pretty SoCal-ish without the ocean/surfing of course. I think our winters are a little more dependable than say Mount Baldy but not by a whole lot. We do know how to make the most of whatever is available and we are usually happy with that. |

Just watched again with the sound!
Not a POV fan. Love the more still shots plus your turns are big and sweeping which makes the POV less POVish. Been seeing these clips bit by bit on FB, sweet to see it come together. AZ is a fantasy land. Oh yea I embiggened the vid a little.

Rad! Thanks Harv. AZ is a very cool place and it's one of my goals to try and capture it's beauty, especially the back country skiing. I hear everyone on the pov and if I could I would do things differently but it's a way to document our skiing without throwing a wrench into the gears of the regular program. I try to get the hand held out as much as I can but I have to be quick, my partners aren't into waiting around very much and either am I. You never know around here when the next good day will be so you have to get it while you can. I'll try to get more hand held for Part 2, if there is a Part 2! |

Hey thanks man!
This is an oldie of me in my Jackson days if anyone cares to watch. Skip to 1:30 if you don't want to watch the whole thing, it gets better at that point.

Don't skip to 1:30 or you'll miss the blood. Did you loose any teeth with that face to knee shot or just get bloodied up
Seriously, good stuff RA I'm with Jason too. How the hell did you get all that footage?? |

So all of that footage was done from across bowls on the ridge lines. I learned these shots from hanging around the TGR film crews and photogs in 2000 and 2001. It was a grand time in my life and I feel very fortunate for the experiences. I got to ski with people like Micah Black, Dan Treadway, and many others. I never made it into a TGR movie and that was my fault. I sort of had a chance to prove myself but the conditions that winter scared the crap out of me and I buckled under the pressure. Oh well :).
During the winter of 2002 I decided to focus on shooting with my buddy Darrell Miller as he created Storm Show Studios. All of that footage is his, he was nice enough to send it to me so I could put together that edit. I was much more comfortable shooting with him and it showed in what I got to create with him. After a few years of trying to be a pro I was left feeling burnt out. I had contracts with companies and all of my gear was taking care of, I even had a pass through Storm Show Studios but I ended up bailing to Arizona. My girlfriend broke her leg that last winter and wanted to return to school. I needed a break from skiing (sort of) and wanted to ride bikes so Flag seemed like a good option. Those years in Jackson are still some of the most memorable of my life. I scared the crap out of myself regularly and I loved it. I was part of several first descents and I even named a few very famous Jackson ski lines. I probably even hit one or two triple digit airs back behind Targhee. I have had photos of myself or been part of articles published in almost all of the major ski magazines over the years mostly because of my connections from that period. It was a kids dream come true and although I didn't make it to the big time I feel completely satisfied with a close enough experience. So I hope this little bit of story telling doesn't come off like I'm bragging, it's some of my story in a quick nutshell I guess. Thanks for the return stoke and interest if anyone actually is. I appreciate being able to tell it to someone. @campgottagopee, the bloody face was just my nose...on that one. That was my first line on my first day day shooting with TGR and Todd was behind the camera. I really like Todd but I felt really pressured to perform for him and that screwed me up. Like I said, I had the opportunity to make it but I blew it. I have knocked my front upper three teeth out and broken my orbital skull bone on two different occasions as well. Lots of other injuries too over the years. 40 hurts! |
