Heading to LP Sunday-Thursday this week. We are going to ski a few days and do some of the fun stuff around town. Here's some of what I have in mind for non-skiing days. We won't do all of this stuff obviously, but am I missing anything?
- freestyle comp on Sunday afternoon - ice skating show on Sunday night - ice skating at the speed skating rink - toboggan run - dog sledding - high falls gorge - snow shoeing at mt. hoevenberg - snow tubing at ski jumps Any other stuff to do with kids? They are young - 3 and 5. The 5 year has a good tolerance, but the 3 year is, well 3 years old. We are staying in LP. Thanks! D |

Definitely love the toboggan chute. Looks like you've got a good list. While you're at Van Hovenburg, you can try the bobsled or XC skiing.

You can't take a 3 and 5 yr old on the bobsled

WTF? Why not. ORDA sucks. I am canceling my trip:) Has anyone done the dogsled? Its hard to find any info. As best I can tell you just show up anytime between 10-5pm Friday-Monday and its $10 per person? It looks like fun. Maybe a bit steep for a 10-15 minute ride but seems like something the kids would love. |

You can blame the Doggie Union for that. They bark at working for just treats. We've skated on Mirror Lake before. It was cool. They had some Hockey matches going on and a good amount of paths cleared on the ice. The sun was setting over the mtns. There was a real charm to it all. I was goofing off and fell on my butt. Everybody laughed. Take your skates. ML skating is free. |
When my kids were young they us to love going to Mr. Mikes for dinner. Then we'd go to Bowlwinkles (right next door) for bowling, vid. games and lazer tag.

The WIld Center, 45 Museum Drive, in Tupper Lake. Check it out. And definitely take them to van Ho for xc skiing. That's how we started our daughter. 2 1/2, in the stadium.

KW mentioned Split Rock Falls. FWIW, during the summer it is an absolutely beautiful, not to be missed place to swim. The large lower pool is magnificent! The water is amazing ! The downstream end of the lower pool is shallow with in-stream beaches. As you wade in the water gets deeper leading to an under water rock wall. The water just sparkles and is crystal clear. Underwater visibility is wonderful and swimming underwater around the wall is absolutely beautiful. There's a mild cascade that descends into this very wide pool.
A hundred yards or so upstream is the waterfall. In between there's rocks to jump from. Choose your leap carefully. Though some do go in it, stay out of the waterfall itself. Going in/under it has claimed lives before. Split Rock falls is VERY easy to find and there is an off road paved parking lot for this popular swimming spot. Wear sneakers if climbing up through the stream. The water is chilly but in no way should that stop you.....It is that beautiful and will literally be some of the most awesome water you've ever encountered. " WOW! OMG!" will be your impression. Word. Harv, you should take your family there sometime in the summer. |
Just avoid it in may, the aderondac scorge loves cool running water, the black fly
To split rock you go right at the crazey intersection, just after you cross the river theirs sevral parking areas, sure in the winter its a site to be seen ice pilers and all (from the keene valley high peaks lake placid exit on the northway) Maybe lp is not quite a city shopping mall, none the less it reminds me of the carosole mall aka destiny usa in syracuse, with some nice non mallish shops Theirs a shop in keene that has taxidermied animals on display, sounds kinda sick, but could show kids what a bear, a mountian lion looks like

I would always do the Noonmark after a day or two of hiking, camping or back country skiing in JB Valley or off the Lake road but after a lot of bad service and grumpy staff I just refuse to go there. I hold out for Mr Ps BBQ in Schroon Lake. The pies at Noonmark are very good and I will still buy them from time to time.
