This doesn't really even qualify as a hike but I found myself in Yonkers with a couple hours to kill recently so I went a little further south to visit one of my old stomping grounds, Van Cortlandt Park in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. I read that there used to be a little rope-tow ski area here back in the 60s so I thought I'd see if I could find it.
During college I shared an apartment nearby with a couple friends. I kept a road bike around but one of my roommates had a mountain bike so I used to take it back in the woods here from time to time. I don't remember the paths being this nice though.
There was a spot that we called "the Rock". Getting up it didn't take any real climbing. It is just a low angle scramble really. You have to look out for broken glass.
Honestly, it was just a nice spot for some casual day-drinking with friends. There was plenty of evidence around that this is still the case. Also a great spot to watch the sun come up if you find yourself out and about around five in the morning.
I never did find any evidence of the old ski area but it was a nice trip down memory lane. I think a lot of people know about the good qualities of Central Park but the Bronx has a few gems too. This ones right at the north end of the 1 train at 242nd st and Broadway.
