Yay, Gloversville!
Richard Russo, along with Russell Banks, are two great writers to come from upstate and chronicle the downfall. Russo's "Elsewhere" talks about what a dynamic place Gloversville was when he was a kid, and then it all just disappeared. Poof. Good read. Used to hear the same from locals I worked with in Saratoga Srings about Schenectady. Even back in the early 70s, Friday night was something else. Plenty of jobs, plenty of money, then, just, poof, gone. Amsterdam is strangely a ghost town, preserved in time. There's no ghetto, because nobody's left.
