I have to respect ORDA for putting on a WC at Whiteface. The more the merrier, that's what that mountain was built for. As for Mt van Hoevenberg. In the mid-late 90s, thy had a couple of national championships and Oly trials for the 1998 Games. You weren't going out on East Mountain or Ladies 5 unless you were wearing a number.
Whiteface obviously is capable of running a big race. I think the only problem would be the early season aspect. Nobody makes snow like killington. They just have more capacity and firepower then anybody else around here. It's funny, I actually showed up at Whiteface in the middle of the Good Will Games in 2000. I had no idea they were happening before I headed up. It was a disaster, basically a mini Olympics. Everywhere I turned there were fences and closed trails. That'll learn me to plan ahead.
I remember that. It was Presidents week I think and we had no one to teach becuase people were there for the event not skiing. Closed most of the Mt down.
if You French Fry when you should Pizza you are going to have a bad time
Whiteface did offer vouchers for people that weren't happy. I took one but I didn't ever get back to Whiteface that year. I had a pretty severe killington habit af the time.
I saw this on the USSA newsletter that came this morning so I looked up what had recently passed homologation.
Of note it had the added Superstar course at Killington and some surprises at WF
besides the Work Cup DH and SG added in 2016 it includes a GS course on the Upper Mt - Skyward/Webers/Cloudspin listed at 381m ~1300 vert feet which would not bring it to the bottom - it would end at the bottom of Victoria I would guess.
