I've been visiting the Adks regularly since 1988. I never saw a single deer in the period 1988 - 2000. I saw my first deer deep in the woods in 2001 and it really kinda freaked me out. We've got tons of deer in the flatlands, but this was a really odd experience. The deer locked eyes with me and actually followed me for about a quarter mile on a bushwack in the Siamese Wilderness. I assumed she must be sick somehow, her behavior was so odd.
Part of what weirded me out was that I hadn't seen a single deer in over ten years traveling through the woods. In the next few years though it became more common. I'd see two or three each time I visited. Now I've got this small open area on our property where I tried to get some red maples to grow and the shoots got chowed. I'm assuming by deer. Seeing deer tracks in the snow on our property now too. It's not exactly a neighborhood, but it isn't really in the woods either.
Definitely have spent less time in the deep BC in the last few years and more along the "edge" so that might be part of it. But also seems like I am seeing more deer.
