My son wants to get back into fishing. We added a couple rods to the dip nets and clam rakes up on the Cape. Fishermen we are not....but we’ll catch something, eventually! Maybe a new rod to pond fish at home.
My youngest son hasn’t wanted to fish in maybe 5 years, since.....the incident! Cub Scout camping trip, I’m breaking down the tent in the morning......sure, go fish, have fun, what could go wrong? Well, he starts running toward me from the bank, screaming.....DAAAAAD, OMG!!!
Then I see the slightest hestitation as his hand pulls back toward the pond.....and he starts screaming LOUDER!
Seems after a cast he got the line stuck in some weeds. He yanks it and the hook come flying back at him, actually catches him on the inside of the pinky. Freaked him out (he was young), but it probably wasn’t at all bad when he STARTED running toward me.
That brief hesitation I mentioned earlier? Well, he had dropped the pole and stated running toward me with the hook in his finger, but the hook and line were still attached to the pole. Once the slack was gone....YANK! Now the hook was really set in his pinky, bad.
Now, I was never much of a scouting parent. I guess neither were any of the other dad leaders. Sitting around we couldn’t figure out what the hell to do, so off I went to Urgent Care. Well, the first Urgent Care couldn’t handle it so off to Emergency we go.
Yeah, someone probably should have thought to cut the back end off the hook and then pull it through his finger. Glad nobody did though because us soon as they did that at the E.R. blood started spurting up from his finger. Impressive distance, for the small artery in the pinky that got nicked!
That’s our fishing story, until we get a better one with the new equipment......
We REALLY need a proper roll eyes emoji!!
