huge crew today, close to 30 cut-happy gladesters prepared platty for eastern tree skiing nirvana this coming winter. it's unbelievable how much trail was done. i cut so many saplings that the blade on my fiskar lopper snapped off at end of day as i prepared to make my last cut. perfect weather.

There’s usually A chainsaw or 2 for the big stuff. Glad to hear there was a big turnout. Junior and me were both bummed we couldn’t make it.

I get that.  I mean what do you do with it?  Do you carry it out or move it somewhere?

Toss it in the low spots.

lay it length wise down the mountain and it gets covered and does not create a problem or cut it up in chunks and stack it around boulders or place it in low spots.

We stack em in piles and burn em out here.

Why burn?  Why not just let it naturally decay?

Re: platty glade work

Well there big piles for one and the decaying process is a little slow in this arid climate. Beyond creating glades we have thinning projects all over the national forests too and the piles are a fire hazard when it’s dry so when conditions become optimal they get burned. The air quality during the early spring, fall and winter can suck if there’s enough moisture to do controlled burns.

The deadfall on the ski area can be ten feet tall. That’s a lot of snow to become skiable and a lot of chainsawing work to get em clear.

That works huh?

I mean I ski over a lot of logs, but I've always been a bit baffled what I do with the big ones.  Laying them lengthwise down the mountain doesn't seem to help because I still wind up skiing over them - I guess at least you don't catch an edge on them, but I have slid out going over logs that were laying that way as I traversed over them.

I actually think they are best when they are in piles and highly visible and out of my ski line.  This is typically what I do.  I'd love to burn them, but some areas I don't think I could get away with that legally.  If it were my own land I would.

I get the low spots I guess, but those depressions still fill up with the same amount of snow.
