JTG - you hit some big points:  Moderation.  Acceptance.  Preparedness.

The real world is full of all sorts of people.  Some are degenerates.  Some know how to handle themselves.  Some practice avoidance and abstinence.

My parents were degenerates but they taught me something very important.  If you are going to do dumb shit, at least be smart about it.  Sounds like an idiotic thing to say, but if you met me in person you'd probably think I'm just a regular nerdy engineer.  I limited my risky behavior but I still did stuff that wasn't considered kosher by the ultra-conservative parents.

Some people are just completely idiotic when it comes to this kind of stuff - they are bound for failure.

Mike thanks for posting that citation , when you read President  Tony Collins Memo , and Tables 3 thru 6  all of which is part of the documentation that you cited ,it clarifies and expands the  policy beyond alcohol ,relative to drugs that is in effect at CU .

These concerns are  subject to due process and in some cases both at the University and downtown depending on the situation
I'm not advocating Marijuana use, but possession of less than 25 grams is a $100 fine for first offense in NY.  It's a violation that is in the same class as non-moving traffic violation.

Getting booted off campus is probably a more serious consequence than the criminal charges, but I seriously doubt that would happen.

I suspect that these laws may become even more lenient, or go away all together in the not-so-distant future.

Underage drinking is never a concern of mine.  Drinking and driving at any age is!  It's just the way I see the situation and the real risks.

Jt the gold in your statement is " its MY job as a parent etc etc "

THAT is my point . People should refrain from telling kids who are NOT their own to experiment .

YOU as a parent have THAT RESPONSIBILITY , and together your family needs to work thru that process. It is all about how to make choices . CHoices HAVE consequences and kids will be better served if they understand options and consequences .
Life ain't a dress rehearsal: Spread enthusiasm , avoid negative nuts.

WD....it takes a village!  As whack as it is, we are part of that village in today's cyber age.

No, we shouldn't be telling Sno what to do re: sex and drugs and rock & roll.  However, it's not a horrible thing for him to hear from those who have been in the world, from WD to RA, so that he can ask his parents about all this shit, that he will be exposed to, if his parents aren't already talking to him about it.

Sno is heading off a year early, so they've got less time to get that done.  My daughter is graduating HS and heading to college in the fall and there are still some things we have to cover.  Not that I'm naive enough to think she doesn't already know, but we still need to have some mom and dad talks, ones we wouldn't have done her junior year, where Sno is now.

My wife and I are pretty straight laced.  We were coming out of high school, my wife being even more responsible than I.  It's downright frightening to know that our daughter is going to go off to college and will do many of the same things we both did.  Even straight laced, responsible, hard working kids do some fun and stupid shit.

Arm them with values, morals and information, teach them the importance of finding the right friends, pray it all sunk in, and know she will find her way.  All part of growing up, but it's scary!  My wife is going to be a mess in August....

My dad told me that I need to have a zero tolerance stance on drugs and alcohol in my car, meaning that I can be designated driver, but no one can drink or use drugs.  I don't want to be getting pulled over and arrested because someone else has drugs in my car.  I think he's totally right on this and it will keep me out of trouble.

That is a good position to take, but at times might be hard to enforce.

My suggestion would be to refrain from having open bottles, clearly visible no-nos, and smoking in your vehicle.

If you want to strip search anyone who jumps in your vehicle, good luck with that.  A pipe and some smoke are pretty easy to stash.  Just don't let them stink up your ride like a Phish concert and the cops won't mess with you.

But your Dad is correct, vehicles are the number one way to get busted for something.  And being fucked up behind the wheel is a bad idea no matter what - that is the number one bad idea.  It's a good way to kill yourself or someone else.

Well no, I wouldn't strip search anyone, but I would definitely make it clear that I don't want any drugs or alcohol in my car and if you've got it, I'm not giving you a ride.  And if anyone lights up or drinks, I'd pull over and tell them to get rid of the beer or drugs.

That's where finding the right friends becomes important.  If you find friends that drink or drug, and most likely you will, and they are cool with you as a DD, they better respect your expressed wishes that they not partake en route.  If they can't do that then you don't need them.

my freshmen year I was surrounded by three wings of females.

OMG!

Coming from an all male christian military school, I thought I died and went to heaven!  Sometimes, or more than most times, "will you help me move a dresser or do you want to study in my room" is code for the good times!

This is not a porn site Scotty! How dare you suggest that a college kid enjoy himself like that! Jk, this is sarcasm for those of you that can't detect it.

All I did was suggest that when they do they should do it safely using condoms and somehow I became the bad guy.

According to PTex and Warp this proved that
-I make bad decisions
-My parents are bad role models
-I'm a heavy drug user
-I will die miserable, lonely, and poor
-I'm insecure and still attached to my glory days
-I think sex and drug use are a way to prove my machismo

Am I missing anything else?

It's sort of ridiculous how dramatic this thread became

I don't think you said anything wrong and detected every bit of humor along the way (I think).

This is serious, but also light-hearted at the same time.  Being responsible is knowing what is serious and how to handle certain situations.

Your car and your cock are weapons of mass destruction, be careful with them.  They will get you in trouble more than anything else IMO.
