Have you considered just locking the thread when you see that its getting out of hand?

If you lock them once they start to go off the rails flamers might eventually get bored and go away.

I have never run a forum (that actually had real users :) ) but I have seen this done on other forums.

here's a solution -

No offense but chances are real low that I will never ski Greek Peak, so I almost pretty much never read that thread.  

I also find gear talk extremely boring since I already know everything I need to know about ski gear, so I never really read that thread either...

I find some people's post interesting   and others boring as watching paint dry on a wall.   Some people are long winded know it alls that post so they can read it over and over and over again....   Some people make me laugh,  some people make me think,   some people make me feel a lot better about myself cause I aint them....

So I ignore what doesn't interest me and seek out what does.  If what does gets tempered I will just move on...

Got complaints from people about the ads with sound too.  (They don't affect me because my sound is always down).

I'll see what I can do to kill them.  While I don't see a way to kill the sound ads, I think you can kill the expandables.

I think the expandables are killed. LMK if you see any.
