That is awful to see. Hopefully there were no injuries or worse.

Wow that’s sad. Pretty ironic too with the whole “save midstation” thing over past couple years that there have been rumors about...

The ski school locker room fire was caused by mice chewing thru electric wires.  That was 6 yeas ago but Jon London said it was 2 years to the local newspaper.

We had heard something about squirrels being an issue up there at mid getting in the roof
With total loss they won’t likely be able to identify a cause

Anyone know if Orda is insured?  I hope this can be quickly rebuilt this summer and not have to wait to be funded by the state

Looks cool to me.

They'll build something new there (with a better layout and flow) and it will be awesome.

Gonna suck this year, though.

Was the cafeteria open when the fire started? I heard it was reported at 9 last night which is a bit later than they would normally be operating.

Large quantities of greasy cafeteria food without regular cleaning, and maintenance of the grease ducts and exhaust fans is a common cause of fire in commercial kitchens.

I wonder how this will effect traffic in the base lodge, and cafeteria this season?

Govt sometimes self insure.   In the private sector this only happens with really huge corporations that have huge financial assets.  I had worked for Berkshire Hathaway which self insures as they own numerous huge insurance companies and assume the risks.

It maybe is in the  Orda financial disclorues for those guys that dig thru them.  I’m pretty sure NYS self insures for stuff like workers comp but I don’t know how they insure assets.  A private enterprise with any debt would be required in the debt contract to insure assets just like your bank makes you insure your car in your have a loan on it.

I would assume Centerplate’s assets in the lodge were insured.

Regardless it’s in many ways a unreplaceable piece of local culture.  That lodge was the place that the community really came together.  A fancy new lodge might replace it but I’m pretty sure we would prefer the old one warts and all.

You liked stumbling down that stupid staircase and trying to get through that skinny hall to get to an ill configured bathroom that doubled as an entrance to a restaurant?

Some lodges have character, but they tried to redo the base of the WF midstation lodge so many times, there was never any way that it could develop into anything good. Boule's Bistro shit.

The top was okay, I guess, but there could have been better deck space, better seating, a better laid out food line, and better access from the mountain (entrance just opened right into a bunch of tables so you felt like you were fighting over people from the start).

They'll replace it with something better and everyone here will be happier for it.

Me too. Locals always like the old stuff because they figure out work arounds for the things that cause the tourists problems.
It makes the locals feel superior. The extreme case is Mad River Glen, but it’s the same everywhere.
