Re: Gore Conditions

Summiting from Yurt this morning yielded a variety of conditions.  Warm up on the 46er was much nicer than I expected with the headwall quite skiable.  Eagles Nest was fast, to Tahwas Glade which along with a number of other glades were starting to show significant wear and tear.  We tried to make it a glade day and the consensus was that Mine Shaft (though much too short) was the best run of the day.  All the groomed trails at the summit skied quite well with good snow.

I think the nicest take away from the day was how beautiful the summit has become, encased in snow and ice.  Something we've not seen in a long time.

Looking forward to the potential for a significant storm not only on Tuesday but with a second round of the white stuff possibly on route for next weekend.

What a really fun day. In from the Ski Bowl, up to Burnt Ridge for the whole day and except for a trip back down to hit Hudson and finally get the 46er headwall. Barkeater, Abenaki, Boreas, repeat.

How was the top? I have no idea.  Main base?  Never got there, and loving it.

It just seemed like low angle was the way to go.

First time on Boreas for me, loved it.

46er headwall was really fun, steep and ripable. So cool to be skiing in sight of town.

Always seems like a good day when you end up on the powerline at the end...

MikePom did we see you and yours loading the BRQ?

I decided to take a few hours today and play with my new AT skis. Went to Gore and droped into the Rabbit Pond trail. There are a few open streams but most have a good snow bridge. Took me about an hour and a half to get down to the base of the Hudson Chair but this was a nice tour. Some nice fresh snow in there. Could not find a companion so this was a safe tour for one.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

Do they have the capability to groom 46er now that they blow snow there?  They're going to need to after the thaw-freeze this week if they want to keep it open.  I'll be there this coming weekend and would like to be able to ski it.

Looks like there's a good number of people on the Hudson Chair.  Good for the viability of that section, but bad for those on here that want to have it to themselves.

No Harvey, not in that pic...I think we were deep in the woods poaching POW at that point in the day.  Found some very nice freshies by the waterfall.

This has nothing to do with conditions but just a report to let all know to "Be safe out there"

Town of Johnsburg
Warren County
Rescue:
On Feb. 4 at 3:14 p.m., DEC's Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from Gore Mountain Ski Patrol requesting assistance for two skiers who got lost off the Black Mountain Brook run on the back side of the Chatiemack Trail. The two 16-year-old boys were able to send coordinates from their phones to DEC Dispatch. The subjects hunkered down behind a large log with food and proper clothing. Two Rangers responded and began hiking in while two additional Rangers staged at the trailhead. The Rangers were able to locate the subjects in good condition. The Rangers assisted the subjects back to the Gore Mountain Lodge. All units were clear by 7:18 p.m.

Totally legit for conditions HH.

That "usually" happens when the snow is good and people follow tracks.

Glad all is well.

Trying to decide between Cannon/Bretton Woods and Gore (Fox44 card, obviously) this weekend, with a preference for Gore. Any word? Dust on ice or skiable?

No updates from me.  I'd be surprised if at least some people didn't have a great time today at Gore.

This just in: Gore is at 1/2 of it's seasonal marketing average of 150 inches...

Interesting chart.

That snow total is taken at the base lodge, 1,500 ft. elevation, I wonder what the delta is between base lodge and summit.

Do you have any historical data (with the exception of last year of course) with the snow totals for this week in past years?  I'm wondering where we stand relative to the mean.

And while we are talking about snow.....what about this clipper coming in that they are saying will be full of Pacific moisture.  WU is saying 8"-12" on Sunday.

I'm afraid to even look at the forecast these days, its like buying scratch off tickets.

About 4-5" of super light pow on top of rock hard base today. Good on groomers (especially low angle groomers), but got skied off a bit on steeper sections and in the woods. Got a little windier as the day went on, so some snow started to get a little wind affected and creamy. Went down to the Ski Bowl and things were out of the wind, sunny, and beautiful. Fun day of skiing, wish more was open.

I think it will be real good tomorrow after they groom it, and it will be real good this weekend. I anticipate pretty big crowds, though, so I won't be parking up at the base lodge.

Thanks, MC.  Yeah, I think the back-yard effect will be in full swing . . . .   Most of my time at Gore is from this clinic over the past three years, but I have been surprised by how many people come up from the metro NY/NJ area.  In my part of LI, it looks like we got about 15 inches.

I am looking forward to the clinic and being back at Gore.

very cold morning today at Gore, Gondola was closed till 10:30ish due to wind....the triple was windy and frostbiting cold.  The lower mountain groomers were really nice, upper mountain not as good...they groomed out rumor and it was mostly frozen granular.  Twister and Showcase were my top picks for the groomers, we skied some trails under the north quad and the snow was odd, mix of hard crust from the freezing rain and sleet.  Topridge also had a weird sticky snow surface.  The best run of the day by far was Boreas glade...I was shocked it was open and I was expecting it to be pretty terrible.  It wasn't, the snow was soft and fun.  Its like they weren't affected by the freezing rain as bad, weird but great fun and the best run of the day.

Interesting. I wonder if a lot of the freezing rain got "caught" in the trees overhead. To continue the thought I wonder if relatively narrow winding trails hold up better as well compared to big wide ones.

How's gore skiing today? I'm headed up tonight. Are the woods in play or freeze thaw crust ruined them?

Also, I haven't been to Gore in a while...whats the deal with the Ski Bowl side, can you ski to and from there and is it better to park over there these days?  Any good runs over there worth checking out?
Skiing is not a sport, it is a way of life.

Ski Bowl to summit requires 5 chair rides. Plus side is you get to sample Gores famous horizontal terrain.
Tele turns are optional not mandatory.

Re: Gore Conditions

Sagamore was fantastic!   and quiet, some racers on the chair and Echo and a new policy on the BRQ is that the liftie stopped the lift everytime a kid put his/her poles under said butt, sharp side in.....I get not wanting ripped seats, but lift stopped at lift 3 times each ride up in the morning.  Someone here could figure electric cost for that.

Anyone, back to Sag, really was fantastic.  Talked to an employee at bottom of BRQ (not pole Nazi) and he said they blew it then let it sit for over a week, then groomed on Thursday night.   That process works, so much better than rest of mt.  Did not go to top, heard not good.

Did get first time on 46er headwall - so fun - also first time on Hudson trail.  Def old school, love the vibe over there.  Both covered, top and bottom of 46 sweet,  headwall interesting in a good way.

Good day avoiding the top, Twister also very good.  Only Gondi open early so sunway to QS - nope, not groomed, crazy chunks of something from snowguns and bodies down at 830 - rest of sunway, then kept heading right (East) and back for the day.  Food service gone from SB lodge, food truck outside, no way to get hot water....

Few people in Boreas glades, most others closed.  All will be in play on Monday.
