Re: Gore Conditions

Gore would be a major contender if it picked up 180”-200”.

It would a whole different ball game.  Once you get that kind of snow pack in the woods, it lifts you up over all the wood and undergrowth.

But I do have to say that Timbuktu and Everglade, are some of the best cut glades I’ve ever skied.

But really, at the end of the day, it’s the meltdowns that are doing more damage than lack of snow.  100” Less melt, rain and ridiculous 70deg days in January would deliver decent woods skiing.

Pics of Jay in Feb. post 40” of fresh POW. It was epic.

Looks to be snowing lightly. Could be more than 5" Gore will often up today's total in the morning.

Gore would be a very different place on the Tug or on the spine. North Creek would be a very different place too.

I think the pressure to change the constitution would be significant.

With regard to the trees, I think when you get less snow you cut things closer to the ground.

Yes exactly. There was plenty to be found last weekend if you went exploring up high. It is tough not having some powder envy when you see the cats and VT scoring so big and we get half or less but still had a really fun weekend (mostly) in the woods. Gore is my home for better or worse for many reasons beyond just snowfall. I'd love to do a season or two at Sugarbush or even Killington but I just don't think its in the cards in the near future. I'll have to settle for days like this with an occasional jaunt east or south.

Saturday somewhere at Gore

Today I am amazed again at the laziness of the snow report. Surely there have to be more glades open than the exact set that were open on Sunday (minus Barkeater which WAS open but never made it on the report). Does anyone at the mountain realize that people actually check that thing to make a decision on whether to go to Gore or somewhere else?

Friday is superintendents day off for Saratoga Schools so I would expect a good turnout. Hopefully you weekday skiers leave some for the rest of us.

Today was epic. Wall to wall skiing. You could go pretty much anywhere you wanted to. Glades were exceptional. I thought that I had been transported out west with some of the powder that we found. Snowed all day. Better get it before it all disappears!

Ethan Snow

A great day at Gore today. All main lifts operational except for Ski Bowl. A few people I talked to said yesterday was a little more magical, but still great wall to wall skiing. Some guy on the gondola somehow knew how much I loved ice skiing, and suggested that I poach Hullabaloo which was in fact boilerplate ice at it's steepest spot. It was easy to avoid however by staying to skiers right, and hucking the ledge that sits just to the right of that steep spot. I also poached Fairview which was also boilerplate but had great snow on skiers left. I love Fairview for some reason, and couldn't let this season go without skiing it at least once.  Everything else I skied today was open, and most of our runs included at least some quantity of glade skiing. Rumor was fantastic with great snow and almost no ice spots on the sides, and I lapped that a few times which I don't get to do a lot of days.  Same guy on gondola strongly suggested to avoid S****Y S***T, so I did. Didn't see any other tracks in there today, probably for reason.
I'll take boilerplate ice over wet snow any day

Gun Barrel, Double Barrel, Dark Side Glades, Upper Darby... were awesome. Kudos to the Gore Crew that cleaned the glades this year. Barkeater and Boreas were the best that I have ever seen!!!  Powder up to your waist if you know where to look. Get it before it’s gone!!!

After bumming around our camp in the morning, we eventually ventured over to the Ski Bowl...first run was down 46er where we split up at the headwall....Hudson was rough, surprised they even opened it.  The fresh snow compressed and firmed up and there was a lot of ground obstruction poking through.

Moxam much better with the reduced pitch it held the snow.  Sagamore was the best run of the day, we never made it to the upper mountain so not sure how it was skiing.  Barkeater for me felt firm and fast unless you jumped into the trees.  Caution was a must on the headwalls and power line crossing.

We're going to score some fresh donuts and maple syrup at Maple Knoll Farm tomorrow morning and give the summit a shot later in the morning.

When it softens up, there will be some really great skiing.

SO....If Gore Managment is reading this, you should know that you almost decapitated my 23 year old son today.

Since when do you pull the ropes on Peace Pipe and Pipeline at 2:00 in the afternoon?

All five of us were carrying significant speed down Sleeping Bear on our way back down to the Ski Bowl after lunch, maybe five minutes after 2:00, not even thinking that the ropes would be pulled.  Milo was in front, and not anticipating trail closure  (which is typically 3:00 or 3:30) he was skiing ahead.  Thank God he realized the rope was pulled.  At the last second he ducked under, or he could have sustained a very serious injury.

I don't get it?  Why pull the rope?  At a minimum put up lollipops, and a sign that indicates no return to the main mountain.  And why make folks who seriously support the North Creek Ski Bowl feel like they can't enjoy the mountain and ski into the afternoon before having to head back to the Bowl?  Are we supposed to ski to the base lodge and take a shuttle back to the Yurt at 2:00 in the afternoon????

Considering all the obsession over safety, I would say the execution here was a major league fail.

I pose the same question. Not happy I had to poach a traverse to get back to my car when a sign that reads "ski bowl access only no return to burnt ridge or gore base" would be the norm at most mountains. Was it roped out of laziness or what?

I too almost got decapitated for the same reason. Sad this almost happened to others but also glad I am not alone in my angst over the stupidity of this.

I seems to me that the reason for cutting Peace Pipe included an acceptance of the fact that people are going to bomb Pipeline.  I think PP was designed to keep that bombing away from the potential crowds loading the North Chair.  So I would agree, there is a disconnect.
