Not that I'm a huge fan, but on the subject of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA, that's what it's called Harvey ), I think many people fail to appreciate the athleticism and skill involved because they can't see past the violence and blood.
I'm more of a boxing fan than MMA, but I certainly have an appreciation for it. My girls brother is a tourny jiu jitsu fighter and I've been to one of his tourneys -- WOW talk about an eye opener! You are spot on regarding the athleticism. In high school and college I goofed around with boxing. Try hitting a heavy bag for 3 minutes and see how you feel. Now imagine that for 10 rounds

JT.. I haven't seen more than a clip, so I shouldn't judge.  It looked like the one lady was unconscious and the other one was beating her in the head.  I'm not doc but my guess is there is some permanent damage to her brain.
I think all of the athletes who compete in MMA are a little fucked in the head to begin with!  That said, it will be interesting to evaluate over time whether MMA or boxing have a higher incidence of brain damage.

As to the end of the Holm/Rousey bout....the sport is regulated and refereed, by a judge in the ring.  That judge was standing over Rousey as she hit the mat after the head kick, if she were out he'd have jumped in and covered her immediately.  She was conscious, and in that circumstance he won't end the fight unless Rousey fails to defend herself.  Holm had to jump on top and land strikes for that to be determined, and once she landed one the referee jumped in, although a second strike hit before he got there.

OK so I googled MMA, mixed martial arts. So there are divisions for men and women?

Camp not doubting they are incredible athletes.

The PR shots of the two chicks in high heels was kind of funny and sad at the same time.

How many here have ever trained in anything? If you did you would understand. I understand it can be offensive to watch, especially with women. Worse things are happening in the world.

It goes way past that for me. I love sports. To me boxing is the purest form of sport and sportsmanship. There's none of this trophy for everyone BS that for some reason our society is all hung up on now. What the hell are we teaching our kids with that kind of action. To me that's completely screwed up  Again, my appreciation for this sport goes back to Gatti vs Ward...... when you're bored give this a quick read. May help you understand where these guys are coming from.  http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a9137/micky-ward-arturo-gatti-121710/

Harv - yes, men's and women's, with weight classes.

Camp - agreed, fighting is exhausting!  Not that I have a lot of experience.  My most relevant experience was in college back in the day, the old Omega Porch Toss.  Our frat house had an eight by fifty foot porch about five feet off the ground.  Two men enter, one man leaves....willingly at least, the other got literally tossed off.  Those wrestling/grappling bouts were brutally exhausting.  Lots of dust ups with my brothers back in the day as well.  Only thing that has ever made sweat more is fooling around with hockey!

I think a lot of people do, and can, appreciate MMA, but Harvey is a good example of the challenge the sport faces.  The biggest bout in women's history, well fought, and all Harvey could see was a woman getting senselessly pummeled on the ground while unconscious, which is not what the bout was about.

Also the thing about how I am disagreeing with you to drive revenue is tired. Believe what you like but the site doesn't generate positive cash.
I believe that and I know that is not your motivation. I only brought that up to hit you upside the head with a 2x4 - kinda MMA style.

You have kids - I think you appreciate my comparison. Why you wanted to make this political I don't know, maybe it was just to start an interesting conversation - that's cool. But don't take offense when I dish it right back, 95% of what I write here is for entertainment purposes only, I harbor no ill will towards you or anyone who engages here. Maybe I should tack an imoticon on all my postings - that's supposed to make everything non-offensive.

No interest in MMA and def no interest in females beating each other....

teachers get paid plenty.  they have summers off, careers that last 30-40 years and sustain zero life altering injuries as a result of their job.  Plus all this teacher inspiring people is BS!

PeeTex , they call it Not For Long because it's def not for long so gotta get paid while they can.

However I only watch the NY Football Giants and not all the time.  I like being in the woods or spending time with my beautiful wife over watching sporting events on the TV.

SJ.....I'll go out on a limb and surmise that you don't live with or know any teachers, at least not any decent ones.  Teaching as a career does have its benefits, however "summers off" and getting "paid plenty" are not among them!

Longevity of a career is not justification for any particular salary, I don't get the correlation.
Whether teachers make enough, not enough, or too much is not the point. My point was that an inspiring teacher has more value in my opinion than a MMA athlete.
I feel sorry for you because you apparently never had inspiring teachers. I was blessed with 4 that I remember by name from High School. I remember them fondly and vividly. They were enlightening and inspirational.

I call foul right there. I come from a complete family of teachers and he's pretty spot on as far as I'm concerned.

There are all sorts of teachers out there, I suppose.....All the good ones I know are doing work over the summer, on top of earning a year's worth of salary for hours worked between the months of September and June, a salary that is most definitely too low for a professional who has a bachelors degree, a masters degree, and has been working in their chosen field for 20+ years.  Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Agree. IMO anyone in any profession who is worth their salt is going above and beyond nowAdays. For some reason teachers love to scream -- hey look at me I don't have to be working right now but I am, I'm the hardest worker on the planet. Everyone feel sorry for me because the summer is almost over.

All the good teachers I know don't complain about how little they make. Those that do shouldn't teach.

Those involved in high risk short term careers I'm sure would disagree with you.

On your second point, well I certainly would agree with your statement.  However, when in the history of the world has compensation been based on society value?  We would most definitely live in a much more enlightened world if this was true.

On your third point (the demeaning one), I learn differently so my opinion on teachers maybe shaded.  I apologize if I offended the teacher crowd.  However sir, there this no need to feel sorry for me.  I always knew I learned differently and adjusted accordingly.  And I was most fortunate to have inspirational family members surround me and therefore never needed a teacher to inspire me.

Re: Holly Holm

Simmer down there, Campy!  FYI, teachers I know and live with aren't complaining, I didn't say they were.  At the same time, seeing what a good teacher does, how much they sacrifice for the good of others.....well, I'm not going to sit by and let people make what I consider to be, based on my personal experience with a number of very good teachers, ignorant statements about how much they work and how fairly they are compensated for the mostly thankless job they do.  You are right, great teachers don't do it for the money or benefits, they have a calling or passion.  Those teachers are chewed up and screwed over, and there are children who are lucky enough to have had them.

Yes, there are plenty of teachers who hide behind their union contracts, show up as late and leave as early as their contract allows, who don't do a lick of planning or work over nights, vacations and summers, who don't go above and beyond and pretty much just collect their paycheck.  Those teachers suck....and they do have the summers off and are well paid for the crappy work they do.  It's unfortunate those teachers exist, and I'm just here to make sure people know that not all teachers are created equal, and many are underpaid and overworked, and the country is a better place because of them....that's alls I'm sayin!

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider to be a "fair" annual salary for a teacher?
