Magic vs Mt Snow this Thursday 2-13-20

NYSnowflake
I am debating between going to either Magic Mountain or Mount Snow this Thursday. I can go with free passes to either place, and I have the day off work. Mount Snow is more of a sure thing- I’ve been there many times. I know they have snow. I’ve never been to Magic and I’m not sure if there’s enough open terrain or snow to warrant spending the day there. I also don’t want to ruin my new skis on rocks. Any input?

if your new skis are a concern go to mnt snow. magic and plattekill can ruin a pair of skis in a second. I suggest buying a fun pair that can go anywhere.

Thank you for the advice. At some point I’ll have to get a pair of rock skis. Right now, my old skis are beginner skis that aren’t really going to take me where I want to go.

All skis are rock skis snowflake.

I second what was said before, have your dedicated hard pack skis and your all mountain shred sticks that you don’t mind smashing rocks with.

You could also stick to snow making trails only.

Still from the sound of it you should go to Mt Snow.  One big downside, mega-pass crowds, will probably not be a factor on a Thursday.

Time vs money: Someday, when you are old like me, you'll ski whatever is in front of you with whatever you got.

Seriously, if you are more concerned about hitting some rocks than you are about the incredible fun you are missing if you just stick to well covered snowmaking trails....well, IMHO, you are missing out, or have your priorities wrong or something.  It’s only pTex!  Maybe I’ve been lucky, but in all the time I’ve skied the likes of Magic, Platty, and thin covered natural snow trails everywhere, the most I’ve needed is a base weld.  The extra $20 or so for that on the next tune up was well worth it for all the incredible, soft, sometimes gnarly skiing it has bought me.  Ski bases are made to be skied on, hard, not pampered!

With all but a handful of expert trails expected to be open, a few inches of new snow yesterday and today, and 3-6 Wednesday night, it should be Magic all the way!

That said, let me ask.....have you been to either before?

When my teenage son got back from a trip last year to Mt. Snow (and Stratton) with his friends his first observation to me was....”Dad, Vermont skiing sucks.”

I’ve skied those mountains before, and in keeping with the Brownski sentiment....it’s all good, because skiing is fun.  But I did tell my son I’d take him to do some real Vermont skiing (of which Magic qualifies).

Slippery slope, rock skis, then ducking ropes, before you know it you're banned from the forum wondering where it all went wrong.

Priorities are, by definition, defined by the individual.

If you get banned from this forum and can’t figure out why you may be something extra special.

Absolutely.....hence the IMHO!  Snowflake may feel different and is free to disagree with my opinion.

My two cents is to go ahead and give Magic a try. I was very nearby on Saturday and I can report that there has been significant natural base enhancement recently.

Re. Rock skis and the joys of skiing thin cover, I think you all know that I’m in the “all skis are rock skis” camp. I believe that Snowflake is headed in our direction so we’ll have to patient with her. The first base gouge cuts the deepest.

I had this same debate yesterday and went with Magic. But I am paying for a pass and a room and they are practically giving it away at Magic! And half price beers and burger special at the hotel restaurant - win-win.

Going to be my first time at Magic.  Currently saying 3-6" of snow and no change to rain (per weather.com) hoping remains!

Oh man, now she'll never go to Magic. My son had a snowboard with those wavy edges. I did realize they were making skis like that too.
