Hard to believe the legs this rediculous thread has. Yes, WE NEED SNOW! Harvey, can we fix this for you............
"Skiing isn't just about quantity, but quality, camaraderie, friendships, and being surrounded by orange fences" If we don't want to accept that, can we wrap up this ridiculous topic and move on to whatever nonsense PowAss throws out next? Hey, I have no objection to use of protective barriers in high traffic/high risk areas. It's done all the time. However, that is entirely different from PA's suggestion to line all slopes with safety fencing, on the off chance someone could be skiing close to the edge of a trail anywhere on the mountain, catch an edge, slide off the trail, and hit a tree. Skiing is an inherently risky sport, and everyone who participates knows that. You will never be able to protect all people from all risks, no matter how nobly idealistic the desire to do so is. Hey, what's the number 2 killer? 3? Where does it end? Yes, it's unfortunate that skiers die on mountains, sometimes when they aren't even irresponsible or out of control. The answer can't be safety measures that would bankrupt ski resorts to install and maintain, and would likely result in lawsuits when someone manages to go off a trail in an unprotected spot or sustains an injury from going into the fencing. On the surface the idea is great. As PA points out, who wouldn't like to save a life? But you have to do more than scratch the surface of even the noblest of ideas. Bottom line......the idea is not well thought out, and is ultimately short sighted and unrealistic. 'Nuff said!

Blew my coffee all over the table. I googled it. Number of deaths for leading causes of death in the US: • Heart disease: 596,577 • Cancer: 576,691 • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 142,943 • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,932 • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 126,438 • Alzheimer's disease: 84,974 • Diabetes: 73,831 • Influenza and Pneumonia: 53,826 • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 45,591 • Intentional self-harm (suicide): 39,518 Maybe we need orange netting around Dunkin Donuts and KFC.

Hard to believe people still use the old and tired WE NEED SNOW take when a thread turns argumentative. Cause you say so? If you don't like the thread don't read it. If others want to keep it going that's their business.

I never said ban skiing....but I would avoid trees when tubing. Common sense. Running into trees and getting seriously injured is not a rare event in skiing. True that most common is a twisting fall/leg injury(used to be way worse before releasable bindings) BTW- That's another safety feature that people on here would laugh at me if I had talked about that before it's use became widespread. You're all a bunch of sheep! Just going with the crowd. But a lot of people get injured running into trees. Netting makes it safer. Not sure what heart disease statistics have to do with preventable deaths/injuries at ski areas. Maybe we should not use releasable bindings or helmets since more people die of cancer???!! WTF?? Even people that take care of themselves get these diseases all the time. Genetics. If there was a cure for heart disease or even a way to stop the aging process, we'd take the pill. The netting is the pill!

I'm starting to think that PowAss has never actually skied a glade, never skied bumps, and never skied anywhere we he has had to avoid anything. Pics or STFU. |
I've never skied a glade and never would.

WTF Drifter........sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities. Sorry I jumped on the 'we need snow' bandwagon. By all means we can feed the troll, as he just keeps begging for it.
What does heart disease have to do with the subject of ski deaths and safety? I'll tell ya! I bet heart attacks on slope are high enough on the 'killers in skiing' list that you should pay attention to them. It's utterly irresponsible of mountains to allow people to access natural features that will result in a heightened level of exertion without making sure everyone is physically up to the effort. So, maybe mountains should administer a cardiac stress test or require a cardiologists report before anyone is allowed to buy a lift ticket. Surely that will prevent a few deaths by heart attack on the hill, and who wouldn't want to save a life. Perpetuate the rediculous!!!!!

On the surface I agree. But I think people are trying emphasize a point, death is a fact of life. As a society we consider human life almost priceless, it is a blessing and a curse. It burdens our systems with huge costs and places us at a disadvantage to those societies that consider life cheap. In this case I think you are hearing that many think that the individual should be allowed to choose the risks they are willing to take. I believe the guidelines in Article 18 For ski areas has it right, they clearly spell out what should be marked and protected. You agreed with the added labor required to maintain skiing quality and fence all trails. If this added safety were a marketable feature, ie you could add the price into the lift ticket, would people pay for it? Skiing is an optional activity unlike driving. Dont do it if you think the risks are too high. I don't hang glide, it looks like a lot of fun but I won't take the risk. I know a doctor who earns his living on the OR, he won't ski because he feels it is too risky, he can't afford to loose mobility, I know other doctors who take the risk.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

Yeah right? I always get a kick out of that too. Do you guys argue more with your friends and family as winter approaches? Please. What probably happens is that as the ski season gets closer, more people come to these ski sites and they're the type of people who have some compulsion to blab about skiing on the internet (because most of them live in a suburban/urban wasteland far from the mountains and these sites make them feel relevant and connected). It's a race to the bottom as they argue about stupid shit. Case in point: Glade Runner vs. PowderAss. They're both dumb asses. It won't stop when the snow starts falling. They'll still be dumb asses blabbing about dumb ass shit. Talking about skiing is like dancing about architecture. Pointless and silly. I won't be happy until these idiotic ski forums finally go away. |

Now, before anyone gets offended and goes off let me remind everyone that humor can be hard to read in this medium.
That 'here you are' was intended to be ironic levity. The 'Nuff said' didn't mean I was telling all y'all to stop talking, it meant I have said all that need to be said on the subject , and you can continue along as you like. Lighten up people!

Great I'm just an idiot and a dumbass for having an opinion that doesn't agree with you. I won't bother to share what I love with you all anymore since my point of view isn't respected whatsoever. I'm not on here pretending to be a know it all and I actually value what others with more experience share. I don't go around calling people names on forums but, I've seen multiple people on here do it. If I don't like what someone has to say I don't insult them with name calling. If you got something to say like that to me, then straight up go fuck yourself. I'll be at the mountains all winter long and if you don't like it I'm not hard to find. I make major sacrifices in life to make what I do in the winter my priority and I will be out every single time it snows all over the east.

I'd imagine the skills NJ has rock in any forum he is in, whatever reason he has for being in them. He must surely fill the same edutainment role in other parts of the interweb.

Not argue, but I'm definitely more of a miserable person this time of year. It's a combination of lack of excercise (night mtb rides help, but with weather like we've had lately, it's hard to motivate), not having skied (not awful now, but when skiing pics start floating in from friends out west...), dark mornings and nights, and election season (ads and office conversations are infuriating). I think "we need snow" is perfectly justified. I was happy last year after the toll road October trip and the early season Jay Peak mission. |
