Nancy Snyderman = Ebola Fail

You may know: Nancy Snyderman is an NBC doctor/media lady who went to Africa to cover the ebola story and one of her team got the disease.  She made a point of doing her own "volunteer quarantine" for 21 days to ensure safety.

She's from the area (Princeton) and I guess her neighbors don't like her at all, calling her arrogant and a lot of other stuff.  So when one neighbor saw her leave her house the other day, he tailed her where she went to a local restaurant to get their awesome/locally famous soup. The guy busted her by calling TMZ and it got all over the news.

Her "apology" was IMO totally lame IMO. She basically said "I'm sorry if the public was upset, but I'm a doc and I know I'm not sick."  Sort of a no harm no foul approach.

Except that that is lame example.  And the restaurant she visited which was a very solid business hasn't sold a single sandwich is the last four days.

I know the restaurant owners so I far from objective. Still I call bullshit.

I wish there was some way I could get that part of the story out. Maybe it would hurt the restaurant more? IDK.

Send a note to Bill O'Riley, he hates NBC and bashes them any chance he gets. This would fuel his fire.

That would be fun. It would pit the fearmongering and sensationalism of Fox News' Ebola coverage against their hatred for NBC and it even has a small business owner angle.

Pretty sure the Ebola fearmongering would win out, though. Chances are the restaurant would end up looking like the bad guy somehow.

Best bet would be to take the sandwiches and soups, move across town and change the name of the business. Ugh. Imagine putting your life into something and then having it ruined by one idiot? Sucks.

I actually heard about this from a local mom, got to work and got the info from Fox.com so pretty sure Bill knows about it.

Thought a lot about trying to blow this up on social media but I think the best thing for the restaurant is to try to let it die.

Went in last night to show support. Nobody inside. The owner can't get through a transaction without crying.  They did build their business from nothing, and moving isn't exactly simple, lots of ovens, refrigerators and that kind of stuff. There are few prime locations in town with the traffic that you get on main street.  Hopefully it won't come to that.

I'd like to see Nancy step up and write em a check.

Wow.  What a completely different view you and I have of the common world we share.  Sure I see hypocrisy and hubris in the actions of Snyderman but I place most of the blame on TMZ and its 24/7 search for scandalous stories with which  it can scare and enrage people.  It leverages the internet and the idiocy/immediacy of social media to serve its narrow interests.  Your love affair with social media and the internet blinds you to all of their many warts and blemishes. Society is still experimenting with the internet and social media and I have little doubt that history will judge these first 15-20 years pretty harshly.  In the case of internet "news" sites like TMZ, it's all about sensationalizing every "story" in as short of period of time as possible and before the shock value is tempered by pesky little things like context or thoughtful deliberation.  In the case of social media sites like this one, it's all about providing an outlet for the pathologically extroverted who don't feel that they've actually "done" something until they've splashed it across the internet for the consumption of a bunch of people they don't know and will in most cases never meet.   I know you've gone all in with all this nonsense Harvey and now have a vested interest, probably more emotional than economic, in it, but my experience is that truly thoughtful people (that are actually worth knowing) only use these sites to point out how hopelessly stupid the sites are.

Am I troll?  You better fucking believe it.  Close your fucking web browsers and mind your own business.  Perhaps Lynard Skynard said it best:

Well now I don't read that daily news
'Cause it ain't hard to figure
Where people get the blues
They can't dig what they can't use
If they stick to themselves
They'd be much less abused

I think it's ironic that I never heard about this incident until I came on this site and saw you pimping it.

Take your own advice.

It is always impressive to quote a band and misspell the name. Its Lynyrd Skynyrd.............

Wow.  You sure did put me in my place.

By the way, I sorta am "taking my own advice".  Look closer.

Go to their Facebook and Yelp pages and express your support.

Send a tip to Consumerist.com regarding the collateral damage resulting from Dr. Snyderman's hubris.

Nancy Snyderman acted like she is above the rules. It pissed me off, so I ranted. I'm sure you can understand that.

I never said that TMZ isn't lowlife - they are.  That is their business model and to their credit, they admit it. The neighbors who ratted her out aren't much better.

IMO the media is the cause of the problem at least as often as they are the solution. Social media is the same, but in my mind a little less evil, probably because it hasn't been fully monetized. Yet.

NYSB is just another social media. You've probably got as many posts on this site as anybody over the last thirty days. Unless you are more active on facebook or whatever I guess this place is your social media of choice. What I post represents me and what you post represents you. It is what it is.

It wasn't TMX or Faux News that brought this to light. It was this site:

http://planetprinceton.com/2014/10/09/dr-nancy-snyderman-back-from-africa-allegedly-seen-in-public/

This is newsworthy. Every day we hear about another incredibly stupid breach of protocol by those who should know better. This isn't some inane non-news TMZ item about Kimye's big ass/bloated ego.

So it's another stupid website.  So what?  And it's not "newsworthy"; it made a big splash for some pukey little internet web site and seriously damaged a small, family owned business.  The internet's great but the internet sucks.

It's looks like things are returning to normal at the restaurant.  Not as busy as usual, but I saw a reasonable crowd in there today.

Can't tell if you (3) guys are supporting the govs when they quarantined the nurse after she tested negative, or supporting them after they let her go.

There are arguments on both sides. Those who argue the quarantine will slow the spread of Ebola are mostly politicians and citizens and those who argue that it's crucial to avoid the quarantine to slow the spread of Ebola are doctors and those talking their advice.

IMO I think it's pretty likely at some point a returning aid worker will infect someone. Also IMO that doesn't prove that quarantine is the best option.
