If you want to ski, head to your nearest airport for a flight out west.  I've got no other ideas other than bowling or a movie, and there aren't many bowling alleys or movie theatres near Gore.

Edit:  The Adirondack Museum is near there.  Check if it's open.  I've been there a couple times and it's pretty cool.
I've lived in New York my entire life.

I take my fam out into the woods to walk around and explore quite a bit. I would think there is plenty of cool hiking around there.  I know it can be difficult for some people (especially some people on the east coast! ;)) but sometimes doing nothing is the best something.

if the ground dries out it could be an awesome time to go hiking. the views should be really good with all the leaves off the trees -- even if you're only able to see brown dirt. Snowy Mountain would be a full day with kids, but has awesome views at the top.

Otherwise you could probably bike or even canoe.

There's a place in Pottersville called Railroads on Parade, I always pass through there on my way to the High Peaks. I've never been there but I was really into that stuff as a kid, might be worth checking out.

I'll second the recommendation on the Adirondack Museum, some really cool stuff in there, you can easily spend a day there. Lake Placid of course has all the olympic facilities that I think you can tour, maybe skate on the 1980 ice? Might be worth a day trip.

Museum is closed until spring.

I was just about to reply.  I say hike, plenty of that to do.  Also was going to mention paddling, I might go just because the water is soft, but I'd be careful with kids.  A dip in the water can be bad this time of year.

MTB would be great, not sure about with kids but I'm not thinking it's going to be dry enough for that.  I tend to stay off the trails when they are muddy or else they can get tore up.  Same goes for hiking, but use your best judgement.  Also doesn't hurt to carry some kind of traction device this time of year, ice can crop up at elevation especially along the trail where water is draining.  I'm sure you could rent some microspikes somewhere.

The Shelburne Museum in Vt is also a nice place. You could take the ferry across Lake Champlain to the museum which is kinda fun. Ausable Gorge is right there by the NY side departure.

I believe the train museum in Pottersville went belly up.
I would hike out to camp Santanoni in Newcomb or up to Flowed Lands (one of my favorite spots) and the VIC in Newcomb might also be open (good for about an hour). IMHO Snowy is not a spectacular hike, a good one but it's a tree covered summit and you have to climb the fire tower to see anything and if there is ice I would not recommend it. What you are going to have to be concerned about with Hiking is ice, after Christmas day it will ice up at night and that may persist into the day on areas that have running water over rock and travel without spikes could be rough going.
Another hike real close to N Creek is Moxham Mountain which is approached from the back side up near Minerva. A nice view of Gore as the summit is open in that direction.

Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

The Wildlife Refuge center in Wilmington is also cool if you're in that area. For hiking, the Lake George area is always warmer/sunnier/less icy than other parts of the park. I've only ever done the Tongue Mountain Range which is great but I believe there's lots of other great hiking on the other side of the lake. I think Shelving Rock and Sleeping Beauty are some good shorter hikes?

Shelving Rock is good - very easy.  Buck Mtn is good - very easy.  Sleeping and Black are a little harder, but good.

The Tongue is awesome, one of my favorite winter no-snow hikes.  I think the Tongue is pretty easy too, just long if you want to do the whole loop.

The ferry between Port Kent and Burlington doesn't run in the "winter".  The one between Essex and Charlotte is the one you want to take to get to the Shelburne Museum.  It runs once every hour between 7am and 5pm (8pm before 12/28).  The Plattsburgh to Grand Isle crossing runs continuously 24/7 year round, but is too far north for where the op. might want to go.

Actually the reason I'm asking is so I can send kids off so I can sit by my fire, kick back and have a few brewski's in peace.   My kid's last about ten minutes with that program.

Anyway, I'm sure some of you are also going to be in similar shoes next week and appreciate all these good suggestions.

I know the Keene Valley forecast is calling for five to eight inches on Tuesday, so who knows.

If I was up there and couldn't ski Gore, I would consider hiking up to the fire tower there.

That would be a whole day.

Can always stow a few beers in the backpack!
