I'm all for running bikes and skis at the same time. That's always good for a couple extra mentions on social media... Good PR.

Plattekill already runs a bike park and they open it earlier than almost anyone. This only amounts to like 2-3 weekends of spinning a lift where one wouldn't otherwise. Having late season as part of Plattekill's brand could allow them to compete with Hunter and Windham better and would mean improvements at all the mountains. If all the mountains do better, that creates jobs and helps the economy. Ethan is right on this one and he has some credibility since he actually owns a ski area and pays the bills for it. I'd think most could get behind that, well except if you're a know-it-all, anti-resort, tree hugger that wants to keep everything the way it was 10,000 years ago, no matter what the adverse effect could be.

Well anyone who is educated knows that all forms of energy are conserved. So, technicaly the word "wasteful" is without foundation. We as Americans, but really the whole world has already established this way of life that IS hurting out planet because we are using one form of energy and turning it into another. We need to be focusing on diversifying how we create energy, not trying to stop using energy all together. We figured out how to get black stuff out of the ground, so it seems like we can figure out how to get carbon out of the sky if we cared enough. Someday it will happen.

Yeah that's me. Not sure how there is any adverse effect to leaving things as they are. Riddle me on that one. So a few people can make a buck? So a small fraction of people can ski a few more days a year? If you simply changed your location and got off your prissy little ass this wouldn't even be a point of contention. And you guys are silly. Lots of resorts stop spinning their lifts long before the snow is gone. Once they meet their minimum days for pass holders, and they get no good volume of ticket sales, it makes no sense for them as a business. Sure it is wasteful. Any educated person who understands the 2nd law of Thermodynamics knows this. You are taking energy to pump water and compress air to make excess snow. Snow that lasts a fraction of the time that the other snow blowing did. Of course you are converting one form of energy to another, but if you think that's not wasteful, refer to my transportation industry post. Why? Why are we doing it? Why does our government make these demands of car manufacturers. It doesn't benefit the industry AT ALL. It's for something bigger. Once you can figure out a good way to supply that surplus energy or sequester the carbon from the FF, I'm all for it. But until then it's a waste of energy that Americans will use in their daily lives anyway, which is far, far too much as it is. |
It would save drivers some extra emissions on a trip to K. I would like to see it. NF would be nice and you could do half groomed, half-moguled.
Bikes at the same time, and a cool deck vibe would seal it. |

Only because the government regulates our vehicles sold in this country. You guys are being so single sided. If gear heads had their way and had grossly huge hp cars that choked fuel down, provided they could afford it (many do, but only on tracks, not in the volume of the DD), and you think you could offset that by driving your scooter to Platte vs Big K, you are sadly very wrong. You conveniently support waste as long as it fills your specific agenda and then bitch about it on some other issue. |

Yeah, most resorts close regardless of snow because it isn't profitable to go any longer. For a few ski areas, including, but not limited to Killington, Snowbird, and A-Basin, it is profitable to push the season. There are people who want to ski later and these mountains stay open so they can ski, and they profit from it. This thread is here because some people who love to ski at Plattekill are speculating over the profitability and practicality of staying open later. Personally, I'm a Whiteface person, (formerly Hunter), so this doesn't affect me. However, if I was still a Hunter person, I might be inclined to go to Plattekill after Hunter closed, so they'd have my business. Not sure why you find the need to get all bent out of shape over other people's preferences. The only times I brought snowmaking into the conversation and caused thread drift is when people complained about conditions and limited terrain, so I presented a solution to the problem. Why would you be so angry if people want to ski later. If you don't want to and would find something more enjoyable to do that wasn't skiing, do it. I don't get all jealous if someone else skis later than me. I just think it's cool that they are able to ski as late as they did, and that there was a mountain open that allowed them to get after it.

I'm not jealous, I'm sadly disappointed that people who fain to support the major issues that present our environment, transportation and energy industries, and particularly those who aspire to be engineers, would have so little regard to something so ostentatious with respect to those issues. I expect no less from you actually. I'm quite convinced that you have no clue about these things and have no idea about the industries you will be wanting to work for in the future. I put up that autism meme for a reason. Maybe sociopath would be a better assessment, but you lack charm IMO. You certainly display lack of regard to anything you can't quantify in numbers, and that's the exact reason why government regs exist. If they didn't, people with your motivations (purely self interested and money driven) would run rampant. I guess my only hope for stuff like this expanding is for the government to start regulating power usage for ski resorts. It's obvious that the skiers themselves are blind to the real issues when it plays into their addiction. What would this thread be if there was no opposition? Just a bunch of silly hypocrites stroking each other's weenies over the idea? |

I actually think it was a much needed comic relief. Sometimes the value of such inanity is overlooked when you are in the heat of battle.
Fact of the matter is, I have no control over this... BUT... perhaps my tree fairy whining will slowly infiltrate some obscure corner of your brain, and eat away at you until you realize the truth of the matter. I'm not trying to be a dick but I've worked on the highest efficiency gasoline engine in the world. No joke. Email me, I'll give some literature. What have you done? Work has been slow and you two younguns' seem extra cocky. Like I say, once you solve the problems I'll support you 100%. |
Curious....what engine is this? Automotive? |

MikeK, did you know all the stuff that you know (or think you know) now or what you demand I know when you were 17?
I don't know about what industry I want to go into as of yet. I just know it will be engineering related. I've got 4 years to iron that out and I'm miles ahead in that process than most kids my age.

Yeah, but you are the biggest contrarian this board has ever seen. It isn't a battle, and it honestly doesn't matter what someone posts because you will post the opposite. |

Oh my. Quite the accusation. I wasn't talking about myself battling anyone I was explaining that to Ethan. Ban me big guy. WTF do I care? I know you want to. You've been gunning for me for a while. Sorry your post was absolute BS you know nothing about. |
Ethan made a good point, that the ski area being open can only help the local economy, which you very quickly dismissed in a non constructive way. As I said earlier, he has some credibility on this subject because he OWNS AND OPERATES A SKI AREA.

No, but your attitude is HORRENDOUS (IMO) but I think I'm not the only one to think that. I'm sure you've been told this before but you sound like a spoiled brat who has no appreciation for anything but whatever tickles your fancy at that given moment. You seem like a kid who doesn't know how to decipher when someone is joking with you and being serious with you, granted I know it's hard on here. You may not believe it, but other than talking about engineering, most of my responses to you I have a smirk on my face. This actually wasn't one of them. Obviously I'm the contrarian to what everyone loves here, but I'm speaking the truth. Maybe you'll realize what I'm saying, but you probably wont'. And most of the people I replied to will take it personal and not think about the real implications of supporting stuff like this. But everyone does it. You rationalize whatever you want to make you feel good about a certain issue even if it's in direct opposition to something you know you don't support overall. I'm just pointing out, what if you couldn't? What if the government said no? And who put through that legislation? It's not about being right or wrong, it's realizing the difference between doing something for your own motives despite knowing deep down that it's fundamentally wrong. We had this talk about ethics before. You missed that one too. Fuck I'll be dead in another 35-40 years if I'm lucky. You might live longer than that. You might actually have to face the challenges we are just starting to finally address now. It's not just cars. It's not just home heating and electricity. It's not just food production. It's everything. And fake snow and skiing longer is absolute BS in the big picture. Sorry it makes you sad, but it's true. If we had a real energy crisis what do you think would be the first to be cut off? Stuff like this. |
