I like the Olympics, especially the Winter Olympics.

Yeah, it's a corrupt boondoggle, that enriches the IOC at the expense of the host country, which it completely abandons after the Olympics are over, but I enjoy watching the events, even (especially) the ridiculous ones like Table Tennis and Curling. And of course, the skiing and Hockey have been great lately. Golf will be fun to watch, even without Rory.

The thing is, we have to start being more selective as to where the Olympics are held. Brazil and Russia aren't currently at the point where they should be hosting Olympics. Keep it in Europe, North America, China/South Korea/Japan, and Austrailia/New Zealand until these countries can get (at a minimum) clean water and decent facilities.

Love the winter olympics always have since i watched the first tv broadcast of the 1960 Squaw Valley games .

As far as the Winter Games are concerned its a shame that there arn't several PERMANANT. Sites , 2-3 in the Alps , 2-3 in the US and Canada  and perhaps one in Asia  I know its pie in the sky but that might help ameliorate the cost overruns and infrastructure issues. Summer Games might also be better served with permanat sites .......just dreaming here but i do enjoy the games.

Favelas have existed in RIO  for eons , so this is not a new phenomena .
Tourism ,National pride and greed seem to always trump the concerns of the poor . SAme here just not as apparent perhaps .

Good idea, Warp. A nice rotation, with an exact schedule would be great. Countries would have leeway in deciding where to hold events (the U.S. could choose SLC, Squaw, Lake Placid, etc.), countries would have to petition to join the rotation, and no country could put their name on the list without a thorough review of their facilities.

A system like that would solve a lot of problems with corruption and grift.

Absolutely think there should be a set rotation of 3 or 4 sites for each winter and summer games.

I'm on board with that idea too. I know the production can be a boost for local economies but it seems so damn wasteful to keep building new facilities over and over again while old ones sit in cobwebs. It's ridiculous and glutenous with no regard to precious natural resources.

Maybe some kind of prorata revenue sharing could help sell the idea.
