Severe Spring Weather (2011)

I can't remember a such a stretch of rainfall and severe thunderstorms.

I saw a report of a possible tornado touchdown in Speculator.

Not fun "watching" this from a distance and hoping things are ok.

If you have pics or info, post up.

Rt 28 is closed from the north entrance of Main St, north to Indian Lake. The Hudson is at 13.53 and The Lake Abanakee Dam is in danger of giving out!!!The water is already going around it on both sides. It's gettin' a little scary up here....

Wow! Water over the dam is very bad news. Hope it holds. Sunny weather for a few days now(?). Hope so.

The News says the Hudson is already at an historical high at North Creek, still rising. A breach in the dam would send millions of gallons downstream reaching NC in 17 minutes.

Concerns raised about Hamilton County dam.......

There's alot of dams around here, some rather old. I've often wondered about them. If the Sacandaga dam ever went.....

A breach in the Lake Abanakee dam, besides the obvious immediate disaster, could ruin the Hudson Gorge rafting businesses, which rely on the controlled release of water into the Indian River.

While rafting businesses are a big concern, let's be more worried for all of the people and their property if the dam breaks!

That certainly goes without saying; let's hope for the best for everybody who might be affected.....Gooley Club membership will be more compelling when you consider its benefits for boating the Hudson Gorge if there is a dam failure.
...Or, perhaps more likely, a huge revenue opportunity for the Club.

Hope all is well. Channel 10 news promises an on the scene, (NC) report at 11. Plus, all those other dams downstream might be stressed or worse if Abanaki were to fail.

There's 5 or more dams on the short stretch of river between Corinth and Hudson Falls. Most of them are tall dams.

Thank God it quit raining. We need a week or so of dry weather.

It seems everything is full and running over. Sacandaga Lake is 2 feet above flood stage. Water is flowing over the spillway. As a flood control dam, they are not releasing water as everything downstream is full.

Crest, baby crest.

River is at 12.55 and dropping steadily. The dam held and looks like it will make through ok. I'm sure there will have to be some repairs done to it when the level of the lake drops, but that is nothing compared to the costs of a breach.
The weather today is much cooler, but also much drier, and tomorrow looks to be the same.
RT 28 is back open with one lane through North River, and will hopefully have both lanes open maybe later on today.

How much rain did you get in the Adks over the last 5 days?

Essex County declared a disaster area:

I went up to Hadley today and saw an impressive sight. Rockwell Falls was basically washed out all the way to the Hadley bridge, where there were exploding waves under the bridge itself. At normal levels, the falls are a couple hundred yards upstream.

I was sitting under the bridge where the drop that is normally the falls turns into exploding waves.

From the factory ruins downstream near the Sacandaga Whitewater Center.
