I missed opening day today but we had one heck of an opener storm dumping 25 inches by the time they ran the lifts today. Apparently patrol decided to open up several bonus runs including Volcano and Casino from midway down. I'm way off the back right now and just dropped off my new front side skis to be remounted to fit my boots as well as getting Cody's new skis mounted up. Jeez......I'm still not really in ski mode though and was happy to miss the crowd scene that was up there today.
Amazingly there's chance for a whopper next week, local weather man Lee Born is claiming up to 3 to 5 feet of snow! That might put us in the lead for base and totals in the country!? things were feeling real drought-y to me a few weeks ago and just like that things turned the switch. I'm kind of in shock right now, this is Arizona after all!
We’re back to more seasonal temps this week. Most of the snow is gone but I’m sure the resorts are pumping away at night. Was going to go ski today but I’ll do some yard work to finish off the winter prep.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.
I don’t know if anyone looks in here but holy cow, tonight has been upgraded to 28 to 34 inches at treeline. That’s deep! Up to almost 70 total! Insane.
Well two days before the big storm I tumbled and went from 35 to 0 in a nano second crushing the back of my rib cage into the back side of a mogul. I thought it might just be muscular but after a week in the wilderness doing trail work and sleeping on the ground I’m fairly confident I legitimately cracked a rib or a few. Ouch.
Oh well. I guess for the next 4 to 6 weeks I’m going to be the dad that mostly sits in the lodge to get his daughter out skiing. :D
In the meantime, here’s some pics from the Mazatzal Wilderness area. It’s an incredible area outside of Payson and Globe Arizona.
I’m back at it! I got x-rays last week and the doc said that there’s no substantial breaks so I got the ok to go ski as long as I took it easy. Doc is a touring partner so I trust him!
I got in two days in the area then went for a tour today. The last two storms didn’t really come through but with an inch recorded over the weekend we knew it blew into somewhere for good enough skiing. We found it!
