Sick Bird Rider
If it is bigger (like the size of a blue jay), likely a Hairy. If smaller, then a Downy. Very similar.

man that pecker looks huge!  Big like a pileated wood pecker http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/pileated_woodpecker/id

but the markings are Hairy wood pecker...  man that pic makes it look very big.

how big in real life?

True story. We were hiking and I got ahead.  I sat and thought about the this thread and the last woodpecker. But all was quiet.

I looked straight ahead and noticed what LOOKED a pecker just hangin on a big dead tree.

He's just a bit left of center in this low res pic:

Woodpecker

Eventually he did some pecking, flew off and pecked some more.

So cool to find a pecker without a peck.

Been hearing a bird screech in the evening by the creek the last few weeks...

Not sure what it is...  But I'm almost convinced it's an owl..   Maybe a a Horned Owl...
I've gone out to look for it - but when I get close it flies away - and it's big from the sound of the wings flapping..

Here's another Barred Owl.  Saw him out of the corner of my eye while I was messing around on the xc skis at home last Sunday afternoon (the 27th, pre-thaw).  We hear owls all the time at home, but I've only actually seen a handful.  This guy was about 40' up a white pine.  I couldn't see him nearly as well as the camera saw him.
