Thank you all! So many options, opinions and experience. I feel that I just need to pull the trigger on something and start there. I feel that in already over analyzing. I know that I'm not going to find something that's perfect for everything. GH does sound like a great way to spend a weekend. I just wish we had some fkn snow in the forecast. A sliver of me says fk a new setup and use the money toward a long weekend at Silverton this year. I'm gettin frustrated! Will keep y'all posted.
The day begins... Your mountain awaits.

We're pretty polyvalent skiers up here in the Hinterlands... You'd be surprised at how much trackset/groomed XC sking I do... It's often the only skiing other than lift served that's doable early season before the backbush is realistically a go. That being said most of our crowd has no qualms about doing stoopid things when skiing is involved.

IMO you are going to like any of those choices, and you'll probably naturally end up skiing how / where your setup thrives.

It's called evolution and or natural selection... (sorry if this infringes on the "no religion" rule Harv...)

I gotta say it was hard for me the first set of Nordic gear I bought that wasn't a spandex oriented ski.
Those blue Madshus Glittertinds were the first skis I bought with metal edges and free heels. Definitely not skewed toward the dh side of things. I was on forums, reading all sort of crap, couldn't decide if I wanted AT gear or XC gear and how heavy I should go with the XC gear. I convinced myself that I wanted something I could ski in groomed tracks and try off track. Those were the skis. Pretty much anything you buy that will fit in groomers is going to be double cambered. They are rough on the hills. But Steve Barnett convinced me I could do it, so I did. I still stuck ass with those skis in all but the easiest conditions on any kind of advanced terrain. They are great for skiing most trails though. Then curiosity and ambition got the best of me and I was skiing this kind of stuff a lot more... next thing I know I have quite an array of weird xc skis. Some are kinda like dh skis. Some are kinda like traditional xc skis. And I kept at it, and it's still fun, so I keep going. I'm not like a tele hippy or anything. I didn't start getting stoned again and listening to Phish. If you want to do that, that's cool too! But I wouldn't sweat my first pair too much. If you wind up liking you'll probably get another pair of skis and/or boots to kind of expand your skiing horizons. Maybe you'll head toward high tech tele NTN world... maybe you'll go retro flannel bearded pinner on skinnies style (that would be E99s or Glitts - just add beard, flannel and leather boots and you're ready to rip). Maybe you'll decide freeheel skiing is stupid and switch to AT. Who knows? Maybe you'll actually get good at it... and maybe you'll write a book like Steve Barnett did. Let's not get too ambitions... get some skis Either way I bet your dogs will like it. |

I think someone hacked into Camp's account! |
last piece of my light tele set up came today - picked a pair of garmont veloce's on ebay. The plan is to mount an old set of twin tips with hardwires to work on my tele skills for some more bcXcd adventures on the epochs.
My question is where to mount the hardwires? balance point is approx. 3 cm fore of chord (measured between contact pts. of tip and tail) The ski is a fischer riu - 80mm early version of watea, light poppy ski with a sheet of carbon, dimesions similar to a k2 PE.... thoughts? |
Twintips... Mount em boot centre to ski centre. Or since this is a U.S. forum, boot center to ski center. Park/pipe skis tend to have even flexes, tip and tail.

Oh and thanks TD, I got lots of different suggestions and info - marked em all on the ski and the mean looked about right, put boot center about 2 cm aft of the alpine "all mountain" mark. they seem to ski really nicely but wtf do i know!? |
