You don't need an immensely powered snow making system to open in late december even with the the weather the way it's been.(not saying mc doesn't have powerful system) Wachusett and mohawk have been open since November. Mountain creek is NOT nyc climate for those who don't know. It's way colder than that being in nw nj at high elevation. MC decided NOT to make enough snow during that cold snap in November and paid the price. They gambled and lost

You need an extremely powerful snowmaking system to run a good ski area in MC's location. All the mountains in the Poconos have it as well. MC usually opens later than the PA mountains because their elevation is way lower. Camelback's top elevation is like 2,400 feet. MC is less than 1,500. I believe that Camelback's base is higher up than MC's summit. Temps on average are also colder in PA by about 5 degrees. You need powerful snowmaking because you will often get subpar temps and you need to be able to make a ton of snow because sometimes subpar temps are all you get. Hidden Valley went belly up because they didn't have enough snowmaking. Campgaw and Thunder Ridge aren't even open yet probably because their snowmaking isn't as powerful as MC's is. I am not saying that MC didn't drop the ball on opening, but to run a ski area in their location which is only slightly colder than NYC, powerful snowmaking is absolutely necessary. Wachusett is way further north than MC and Mohawk is too. It is no wonder that those two can open earlier.

I agree you NEED a powerful snowmaking system ANYWHERE south of VT/NH/ME state lines, but they definitely gambled and lost by not blowing enough snow during that november cold snap. They absolutely could have opened earlier. Mohawk isn't THAT much colder than MC. Just a little colder.

Hunter Clair's Way. Really wish they groomed it.

^ Looks sweet.
Maybe someone needs a bump lesson? |
I was thinking the same thing. Why would you want that groomed? |
I just like cruising on groomed trails better than bumps. Plus my skis are designed for groomers and not bumps.

Me as well. Bumps/uneven crud ect sucks. Nothing better than freshly groomed. Only exception would be powder day obviously. Then you leave the freshies alone on most trails

What about your Hellbents? Aren't they rockered? I have a blast on crud with my EPs. |
The rocker is for floating in pow. Hellbents are soft(not stiff) and suck in crud. Ask anyone. Hellbents are best ski for untracked pow. They;re playful and awesome. Now, I could get a ski for crud, but I hate crud anyway so I'd never do that just the way I'd never buy a ski that is designed for ice/new england pack because I don't ski ice. Even if I have a super sharp thin stiff ski for hardpack I still don't enjoy it.

Bumps are fun. I like to ski some big manmade whales sometimes. Windham has some bumpy runs today. I think they are keeping the bumps to preserve them for the rain coming. Thank you Warren Miller. Second free day here so far.
