Vertical: 952 feet Base: 1,148 ft. Summit: 2,100 ft. Acres: 257 Trails: 29 Avg Snowfall: 110 in. I was checking out the Greek Peak trail map. In the image above it looks bigger than I thought and i also looks like all the vert is usable. What's the place like? What does it compare to in NY state? Plattekill? How's the tree skiing? What's the most surprising thing about GP? Seemed like Greek got a bunch of snow last year - anybody know the final total? Pretty cool to have a big glade near the summit. Is Aesop's as big as it looks?

Greek Peak is home, there's no place like home...thank God. Actually, it's not that bad. They are far enough north to benefit from some lake effect snow. The terrain is O.K., there are a couple glades on the map, and a few that aren't. There's a power line that can be skied when there's enough snow, I've heard it was actually a trail at one time. Olympian and Odyssey are not bad. Hercules, a trail they cut several years ago, is strange. It's flat to start, steep head wall for about a hundred yards, flat again. It's fun in the Spring, but during the Winter the head wall doesn't hold snow and is usually a sheet of ice. Would have made a better glade, IMHO. Zeus is adjacent to Hercules and can be fun, but the head wall suffers the same fate, but is usually icy for a shorter length. The East is a cool place to set up shop on the weekends. If you have a season's pass, you can avoid the mob scene at the main lodge. The rest of the mountain can be accessed from this chair, it's the place to cookout on a sunny day. The only problem is, it opens later than the main lifts. If you want first tracks, you must go to the main lodge, or settle for first tracks off of chair five.
One good thing about Greek is that it's probably 80% lit for night skiing. The only trails on the main hill not lit are Olympian and Hercules, the East closes at 4. I usually ski a couple nights a week, and both days on weekends. The worst thing about Greek is the chairlifts, they suck. We have been promised a new lift for the last couple years, fixed grip quad, nothing yet. Seems skiing takes a back seat to water parks and zip lines. I think the day rate at Greek is absurd, $64. Season passes have gone up to $325 early purchase, If memory serves me. I paid $199 for the first four or five years I started buying passes, couldn't beat that with a stick. I live exactly between Greek and Elk, I'd like to alternate years season passes, but Elk wants $575 per year, last I checked.Only three lit trails at night too. I usually make it to Elk a couple times a year. They are pretty comparable as far as vertical and trail count, zero tree skiing, that I know of. I've talked to people at Elk that were dumfounded that I had traveled south to go skiing. Aesop's Glade Tee-Pee, woods between Hercules and Trojan From left to right, Stoic/Elysian Fields, Alcmene, Iliad, Odyssey, and Olympian, must have been a weekday. Oh yeah, the best thing about skiing Greek, half price lift tickets at Whiteface with a season's pass at Greek, $37.50 for 3,000 ft of vertical ain't too shabby. The discount used to be similar at Gore, now I think it's $10 off, I don't get the difference, NYS owns them both. |

Cornhead covered a lot of what Greek has but I'll add my 2 cents.
To answer your question, Harv, NO---Aesops is no where near as big as it looks like on the map, in fact, it's quite narrow if you stay in between the "orange"....outside the orange is where you can find the good stuff. Ronnies Run (the "real" name of Aesops) is my fav trail GP has to offer. Not because it's difficult or whatever, but it's actually a good, albeit short, tree run. IMO, chair 4 is the place to be when snow is good. Between Zues and Herc you have some decent headwalls, couple tree shots (ifin you know where to go), and a good fun cruiser in the Trojan. The power line (used to be called the Electra) that Corn mentioned is there as well, (btw, u stay out of there )and is a blast when taken from the top, but start from skiers right and work left---it's a funky fall line. Chair 5 is where the party is at (u really need more smilies Harv). When the sun is bright you'll find all kinds of dead stuff cooking on grills, beer cans popping like fire crackers on the 4th of July and even some hootin and hollerin going on....that chair 5 is a fun place. I've been skiing there 35+ years and it never gets old...they claim to have 950 vert (maybe??) but it skis like 800ish...the place isn't "worth the trip" but if you happen to be in the area it's def worth the stop. |

Greeks Seasons Pass for this coming season was $325. if purchased before April 15... because of income taxes I missed the deadline... then I got a letter mid May from Greek Peak stating that you could get the $325. price until May 23rd... I grabbed that deal and am looking forward to a great season. Greek does catch a LOT of Lake Effect snow from Lake Ontario. Greek does a decent job snowmaking and grooming. Also Greek has a lot of lighted trails for Night-Skiing.

You guys really made GP look good!! Maybe I'll ski there some time. |
Those are some nice pictures. This is another place (like Elk) that is just in the wrong place for me. Those who live nearby and can enjoy GP for their local area are lucky.

Yep, it's pretty cool to have right here. Actually, there are 3 ski areas within a 20 mile radius (or close to that) Greek, Song and Labrador....take your pick. |

Thanks for all the pics, Cornhead, Big D, gorgonzola. The aerial especially gives a great overview.
If it's not a closely guarded secret ... what's off the backside? (That would be south?) Any other lurking GP skiers ... PDQ, Cornhead, Big D, gorgonzola ... anybody else? Got a big NY Trip Report Hit List to knock off you guys would be the candidates for Song, Labrador.
