Trump is thinking about trying to buy Greenland, which is.... awesome. I say we buy the shit out of it and see if we can grab Iceland, too.
But it got me thinking. If the US could annex one ski country as a colony, what should it be? Obvious answer is Canada, but Japan, New Zealand, or Switzerland would be fun, too. |
What about Chile or Argentina so's we can ski year 'round without so much jet lag?

Oddly enough the US tried to buy Greenland in 1946 or 47..Denmark obviously said no..

We could put Vail Corp right out of biz!

In reference to the other thread about the end of skiing - skiing isn't going to end with global warming, it's just going to move north, much like the population will have to.
Imagine 20+ hour daylight skiing in the summer https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Gunnbjorn-Fjeld/forecasts/3694 |
Quebec would mAke a nice adder for skiing
I figure since Denmark has been paying only half of their NATO commitment they owe us big time and would just give Greenland for defense services rendered

Did we just all agree on something?
I don't rip, I bomb.

Oh snap! It’s getting all political up in here! Can everyone play nice and not get triggered now?
Here’s something Trump did or is doing that I’m on board with. As some of you may know the extreme environmentalist movement has put a stranglehold on land managing agencies to actually manage the land for all sorts of things including fire management, trail development and conservation. https://www.hcn.org/issues/51.12/u-s-forest-service-might-limit-public-comments |
Finland just collapsed due to its socialistic tendencies- they should be a cheap buy now.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

meanwhile.... The rainforest burns... Skiing is over now.. Hang 'em up...
|
I'm obviously not in favor of the rainforest burning (and long term, I agree, we're all fucked - and squandering the 2016-2020 period isn't helping), but the resultant dust & ash might cause a temporary cooling for the next couple of years, like volcanoes can cause: https://scied.ucar.edu/shortcontent/how-volcanoes-influence-climate

Yea - more alarmist BS. https://psmag.com/environment/the-planet-now-has-more-trees-than-it-did-35-years-ago
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

Cool. We're still fucked though.

Clearly you don't understood the particular role that the Amazon actually plays in generating oxygen for the planet, because you think it's just about trees. The life in the Amazon consumes all the oxygen generated by the trees there. But the Amazon is still responsible for generating massive amounts of oxygen that benefits the rest of the planet. It ain't from the trees, but without the trees there isn't a rainforest and without that there isn't massive amounts of mineral rich soil carried into the oceans and without that there aren't massive diatom blooms and without that there isn't enough oxygen (plus without the billions of years of that cycle there probably isn't a Sahara desert which plays an important role in the entire cycle). You've always seemed proud of your ignorance. Try learning something that doesn't support your narrow world view. |
See my post above Camp. Like most things, the majority of people take a reductionist viewpoint and never bother to do any research. Each "side" digs in their heels and it's easy to find "facts" that support one's point of view. Like PeeTex's "fact" that Finland just collapsed. That's got a teeny bit of truth to it in the sense that earlier this the Finnish goverments attempt at cost cutting reforms failed and (I think, but I don't really remember) caused a turnover in their government. But PeeTex throws that piece of info out there (and there are many many right wing "sources" that support it) and nobody challenges it or bothers to even see what actually happened. The facts are that the Amazon rainforest is vitaly important to our planet. It directly produces a huge amount of oxygen that is about equal to what the life there actually uses. Indirectly (due to the runoff / diatom cycle) it is a HUGE net producer of oxygen. Facts. Science. Things a lot of fucking stupid people choose to ignore out of convenience. |
Wasn't trying to change your mind Willy.
Just put up a link that I thought was pertinent to this thread as well as interesting. |
