I hope people were able to take my advice from yesterday and get over to Whiteface today!!! Once again, while not an "epic" day, it sure as hell was an AWESOME day!!! Absolutely gorgeous weather, paired with some of the best packed powder and loose granular conditions I've seen at Whiteface in a really long time. There were simply no bad choices today ... everything skied great, and once again, lift lines were minimal at worst. Those who have been able to ski Whiteface the last three days are very fortunate.
This led me to think about the unfortunate people who had come up this past weekend only to endure extreme winds, biting cold, insane lift lines and horrible conditions. Some friends of mine who endured the weekend mess had heard several people in the lift lines comment "I'll never come back here again". While I can completely understand how those folks must have felt, at the same time, I hope that some of them were able to stay on and get back out to the mountain on Monday, or especially Tuesday and today. If they had, I'm sure they will have changed their minds! It looks like the beautiful weather we've had is going to change a little over the next couple of days, but I'm still expecting conditions to be really good. Hats off to the Whiteface grooming crews who have done an incredible job this week!!!

how was this weekend? how is snow coverage? please, share few words.
I plan to take my son next weekend. |
Whiteface got a foot of snow in the last day or so.
Can anyone tell me if the slides were open? or are going to be open? What's the scoop? I may just need to go up there soon to find out. |

The future is anyone's guess. Looks like there should be a chance this weekend. (?)
Whiteface (Aaron) has been pretty good about posting Slide openings on Facebook. Somebody should know if they have been open this week. HPD? The last time I saw the opening of the slides on Facebook was 3/30. Trying to get more info.

From the website:
"Glade trails, Upper Mackenzie & the Slides are on standby daily expected to open as conditions permit. We remain open daily until Sunday, April 10th. Based on snow conditions and popular demand we will reopen the mountain for another weekend of fun Friday, April 15th, Saturday, April 16th, and Sunday, April 17th." That's probably the highest level of "commitment" you can get on the question of the opening of the slides. EDIT at 9:55am: Slides are open today. And a note from Bruce: "I think it is safe to assume we can get the slides open on Saturday." (I'd asked specifically about Saturday as I thought that was the best chance.)

Slides opened today! With a fresh foot!
Can't wait to get there! Harv, will we see you? |
I want to go home this weekend. SO bad.
(Via Whiteface's Facebook) I'd say it looks decent. |
The word today was that the slides were skiing like wet mashed potatoes and rock was getting more exposed and they were going fast. Hopefully they will hold til Saturday.

They will, there is a ton of snow in there. I remember you wrote you liked 4 the best. It skied great today and the traverse over had plenty of snow on it. Its true that the snow was heavy.

Just got in from WF and I have to say it may have been the best day I have ever skied there. So happy I used my last chance to get up there today. The slides skied great...#4 was a bit of a pain when there were people in the run out...my pick today was some mish-mash of 2 and 3 best snow and the least people. Mackenzie was incredible...hero bumps...with Gore yesterday and Whiteface today this may have been the best weekend of the year(well...definite top 5)...and if it ends up my last...what a way to end it!

Excellent weekend at the Face, today was even better that Sat. Skyward skied like butter but not too soft this morning, Upper Northway was perfect for high speed GS turns (where has that trail been hiding?). Lower Northway also nice, didnt get to Mountain Run due to neither lift from the mid-lodge spinning this morning.
Slides were incredible, #4 tight but hit it early so no traffic. #2 to #3 then back across to #1 made a great late morning adventure, so much soft snow on #2 felt like the West, not April 10 in the East! |

From whiteface.com:
"It's official. After 138 days of skiing and riding, 247" of natural snow and 12 days in the slides Sunday April 17th will conclude the 2010-11 ski season. We'd like to thank everyone who came out and graced our slopes with their presence and made this a fantastic year! We look forward to seeing everyone at our Olympic Sites this summer and back on the slopes next winter."
