I decided to do a short tour this morning on the ridge behind my place. There is an old logging road that leads to a ridge, I use to keep this well cleared but haven't chain sawed in there in a few years so there was a lot of blow down and trees bent by the icy storms. As I had suspect it was 3" of this AMs fresh on top of a crust from last weeks rain. It was a nice tour and skin up the ridge but the turns were difficult on the way down, lots of unweighting and jetting to stay on top of the crust.

Snow in the backcountry is crazy deep. Did some touring and had to turn back - breaking trail was exhausting. I got only a mile in and it took over an hour. Snow was almost up to my knees. When I stopped to put on skins I sunk in above my knees. I turned around and aborted the tour. The ski out over my tracks was pretty good.

The XC and BC report formerly on the Jackrabbittrail.org website has been moved to the Barkeater Trails Alliance (BETA) website. Same range of conditions for the groomed centers, Jackrabbit Trail, and selected backcountry destinations. Its good source of snow conditions in the High Peaks/Lake Placid region; I find it pretty useful. I get snow conditions for other regions in the Adirondacks from snowmobile and ski area websites.
Read that Vermont BC has deep snow conditions, tree wells are pretty dangerous. I have not seen those depths here yet but I also have not gone high up yet this year.
