The skiing today was unbelievable. Foot and a half of heavy (7:1 I'd guess) by close today at the summit. Lots of trails are skiing very well with very skiable coverage. Gondi and rfid solid all day long. What a day 1 of the season
I may make it up. If solo or with my son, would like to meet up (he can ski anything there). If son and daughter it will be pure kid fun time / occasional kung fu battle.
Scotty - did we ski together last year at Platty? I think it was two or three runs on the double? Maybe the day Glen Plake was there - superbowl sunday? I only skied there a few days last year, but I think that was one of em.
Dom b yes that was me last year at Platy
Hope to run into u again
Me and Jim g (from AZ ski forum
Will be at Bell Friday 100% and most likely on Saturday to
I have NY ski 3 season pass this season
Awesome day 2 of my season about half foot of snow falling during the day today Friday early December looked more like mid February sweet
Maybe some sun tomorrow when me and Jim G from AZ ski forum due it again
Awesome first day with my son. Scotty - sorry we didn't connect. I thought I saw someone who looked like you skiing down Belleayre run as I was coming up Superchief - did you end up going Saturday or was that mistaken identification?
Saturday skied very nicely. The conditions reminded me of skiing the handful of big March storms that I have been able to get up for. Very fun, and very powdery off the groomed trails. Even a week after the snow, there was a lot to ski. Note that the trail count was not high.
This was just a short guy trip with my son and I. The ladies didn't want to come, which was fine. My son is generally awesome and is becoming a great ski buddy.
For the lift fans out there, the new quad that replaced the double-double is a fixed grip carpet loader. It will be very good when the work out the kinks. A second improvement was they moved that lift closer (up hill) to the Gondola. This was an issue becomes folks who could get off the carpet had to go down a small hill that had a lot of traffic and the pitch of a blue. Not a good recipe on crowded days.
They will have to fix a grading issue - leading into the gate of the lighting quad (I know, not the best name), there is a slight uphill grade. This will become a bottleneck on busy days, as some people taking the lift will be first day skiers.
Super super awesome yesterday. Skied the entire mountain. Powder turns from start to finish. So nice to ski the entire mountain with barely anything groomed, we don’t normally get to do that.
Will be there for first chair today. Grey jacket green pants Oakley goggles and a beard if anyone wants to say hi!
Conditions yesterday Friday December 20
2019 better than expected
Be there tomorrow Sunday with Jim G from AZ ski forum and few other great ski friends
Very fun spring conditions at Belle yesterday. Even though there was a race, the mountain was nearly empty.
Soft snow; there were areas also of slush, ice, and water running up from the ground through the slush/ice. On a few trails, you had to pick your line where the trail would trim down to a ski length or two if you did not want to go through/over slush or ice. Going through and over was also fun.
The Gondola was on wind hold, which made it hard to get to the other (West?) side of the mountain. Not many things could be groomed because of the temperatures. That made the short, steep ridge runs off the top fun.
Of course, it was a bit sad that these were conditions on Jan. 10. Apparently they are set to get 8 inches of snow that will go a long way.
Typically, Belleayre has bump runs. Usually the runs marked double black are left to bump up, and for some of the runs, it goes down about 700-800 vertical.
Two caveats: there wasn't enough snow for any bumps this past weekend (though some runs weren't groomed); and I have heard that new management (about 1-2 years old) is not supportive of bump runs.
I would say I have noticed a decline in bump runs, but Belleayre has its fair share.
