So I've yet to see how the Gov plans to pay for this. More cuts coming to Orda to balance the budget??? The money has got to come from somewhere. This appears to be the opening salvo of the Govs quest for the WH.
If they are going to do this there needs to be some limitations such as you only get 4 years to graduate and a min sat and gpa to get in and a min gpa to keep getting the free tuition plus some limits on what you can study. No more BS degree paths on the public dole. Otherwise this is just a way to subsidize the partying and laziness of a generation that is already 1000% spoiled rotten. The other part is that those that partake in this should be required to do govt service jobs for a couple years upon graduation or do service projects during the summer breaks that would benefit the state since the tax payers are footing the bill. They could be out building new mt bike trails or cleaning up polluted areas. Concerning the room and board issue - do SUNY state schools require freshman to live on campus at the high prices they charge for the dorms?

Your reward is not having the expense of raising kids. Those of us who have kids are raising the next generation to support the USA and all those programs we will all be using in our old age. As for those "huge" deductions, they disappear pretty quickly, especially in 2 earner families. |
I get that some would think that's a fair argument. I already pay for your kid to go to school so why shouldn't I get deductions as well??? We all know there are too many people on this planet already, so there's that. Plus you assume because I don't have kids I save what it would cost if I did. Nope, I blow it on fun stuff |

And the other reward we don't have to ride around on a dock with a motor and call it a boat.

Not sure where "huge" came from, not me.
The biggest tax or cost related to kids that I pay is property tax. It's a big number in our town and 65% or 70% of it is school tax. Because it is property tax it is loosely progressive (or not regressive), meaning if you have a bigger house (and possibly then more kids) you pay more. The idea is that all of society benefits from well educated kids. That is why I said "to some extent." It also reflects some of what is wrong with the way capitalism works. No one seems to have figured out how to create economic growth without population growth.

NOOOOOOO!!! I want my snowmaking upgrades!! Agreed, can't go for "gender studies" on the taxpayer dime. Need to study something that has earning potential so you can pay taxes to make up for the cost of education. I admit to being quite spoiled, but I scoff at "partying" in any form, and am about as anti-drug as one can get. Not all millennials fit the stereotype, although many do. Some do, some don't out of the SUNY schools I looked at. I believe all the private universities that I looked at did. Almost everyone at Clarkson lives on campus as Potsdam has really limited housing options and the area between campus and town isn't very walkable.

The ORDA budget is a pimple relative to the NY budget.

If a tangible product is worth something (in this case a diploma), it should be worth paying for. The cost of higher education should be relative to what it costs to educate. I don't know why the costs are so exorbitant; those should be controlled in non-private universities.
Full funding assistance, in the form of loans, should be provided to anyone who needs it. The interest rate on those loans should reflect the probability of finding a job. You want to be an M.D.? Ok, we'll lend you the $300k with no interest. Want to study fine arts? Sure. Same amortization period, 10% interest.

A war on the humanities has got to be the hallmark of a nation in severe decline.

My suggestion reflects the realities of supply, demand and risk. It doesn't prevent anyone from studying what they want to pursue, so it is no way a war....or even a fisticuff. What could be more fair?

It's like this guy is a trying to be the perfect progressive (whatever the fuck that means) according to The NY Times handbook for liberal thought. Want to study gender equality studies have at it but not on the public dime that I as a taxpayer are paying for.

You can study "gender equality studies " and get hired for multiple jobs, including sales. You can also go to medical school, pharma school, law school, business school, and any other grad school you want to go to. The idea that only tech undergrad degrees have value is a false premise. |

Right. I'd much rather have my dime going to teaching business majors how to exploit every loophole and crush competition in the dog eat dog, every man for himself world out there.
Oh, and give them fridays off from class too so they can rage on thirsty thursday without consequence. |

You wil not get into Rx school without the necessary heavy science and math concentration and your GRADE POINT AVERAGE as an external transfer would have to be in excess of 3.75 realistically to have due consideration ,inspite of lower GPA's which are sometimes touted in 3.3 range .in the undergrad schools marketing effort to attract kids for the 2-3 yrs
MOST Quality Rx programs have approx an 80 /20 ratio of acceptance from INTERNAL transfers ( meaning those who completed 2 yrs in the pre Rx at the university and then must take the entrance exam to the actual professional grad school for the doctorate in Rx So to be accurate it AINT an easy lift .

That means only approx 20 percent of EXTERNAL Transfers get in and those are typically >3.75 's

I never said otherwise. Bio and Chem are in Arts and SCIENCE schools and GPA always matters, even in Gender Studies. If you take the proper courses and get the right grades you will get into a pharma/med school/law school/MBA program even if your major is Gender Studies. |
two things:
wtf is gender studies? and TJF wtf are you talking about with the motor boat dock? I laughed but am unsure what is being referenced. some great stuff this week on the forums!
