On the original topic:

I agree that foot pain at that age sounds like gout.

I like drinking, but I probably drink too much. Every once in a while I take a couple of days off, and don't really feel any better. Sometimes I think about taking a month off, but then there's always some event that I want a drink for (concert, aprés ski, Friday, etc.).

I drink one cup of coffee a day. That seems fine for me.

I like "natural" remedies for anxiety and pain more than pills. Bonus is that it helps my stomach issues, too. But I haven't had an anxiety "attack" in a long time and I really only had one or two (looking back, I guess they were over decisions that seemed huge at the time, but I now recognize as just parts of life).

I think that now is a good time for Harv to sell his business, retire, and start living a more stress-free life where he can spend time with his family and ski whenever he wants. I think he's gonna develop a case of "One More Year" syndrome, when he really should be flipping everything on its head and getting rid of responsibilities at this age. If he wants, he can take a new position as a "consultant" to his old company and work in 8-12 week stints on projects.

These are all just some opinions I have.
Matt, I had this idea for you for a few years now. You should develop an app like Uber but for ski instructors. Live the dream! This is your calling. An hour lesson covers the lift ticket. Then free ski the rest of the day.
Ok, back on topic. No beer until Sunday for me.

Damn....Looks like MC is gonna slow play the GMI Plan plug here!  Not sure I’ve seen him do that before....

Original topic?  I don’t like booze, I PARTICULARLY don’t like beer and bourbon!  You should all know that by now!

Not to be a dick....and I’ve had people on this forum tell me maybe I should try not drinking so much.....but this thread has me feeling better about my drinking patterns.  I’ve never been an every day drinker.  A single beer after a Monday night league soccer game, sometimes.  Fri and Sat nights at home I’ll kick back with a couple three drinks over the course of the night.  A couple three bloodys or beers on a day at the ski hill.  I pack a flask on certain occasions.  My parents were both alcoholics, so a daily drinking need is something that would scare the crap out of me, if I developed that.  The day I put a fifth under my car seat is the day I check myself in somewhere.  I’ve seen booze ruin too many lives that way.  I should probably forgo the once or twice a year bender with the right (or maybe that’s wrong) people under certain circumstances.  But give up booze?  Other than cutting out the beer to reduce the not very large “gut” that the kids make fun of, I haven’t really thought about it much.  Maybe it’s denial, but I’m not sure I see a need to do so.  I’d save some money, and some Sat or Sun mornings I’m sure I’d feel a little better if I had one less drink and a few more hours sleep.

Coffee...I’m a two cup a day guys, if that much.

There’s other things besides booze and caffeine that I’d prolly benefit from giving up.....

That's a party! I love to party with my buddies and we do it good

Did you know you can't drink all day unless you start in the morning? Speaking of parties we have the Annual Chair 5 Super Bowl Party this weekend ---- WOOT!

Yeah, I actually had an idea for an app called "adventure buddies", where you would pull up the app and see if anyone around was doing something fun in whatever city you were in. Then people from out of town (or in town) could hook up with people planning a bike ride, hike, paddle, or ski (or ski lesson, or avalanche training, etc.). People would get ratings on safety, personality, fun factor, etc. Good adventure buddies could demand top dollar.

But then I realized that the insurance costs & liability would be astronomical.

Also, ski resorts don't like rogue instructors teaching lessons. Money out of their pockets.

I guess.  Don’t get me wrong.  A handful of times a year we (including the wife) have occasion to party.  On such occasions I usually drink way more than the wife would like me to, but we have fun.

The once a year bender with some of my friends....that DOESN’T involve the wife, and I drink WAY too much, and really dumb shit happens.  It’s the kind of train wreck that anyone watching would say ‘that dude is FUCKED!’

Those are the only drinking engagements I regret.  We could all do without those, IMHO!

That sounds even better. Fuck the ski resorts. It's none of their business.

Idea stolen from a TGR thread.

My foot was kind of hurting me around Christmas. Not enough to bother me too much or stop me from skiing but it kinda scared me that it might get worse.

Danger: I did some doctor google and got this idea that cutting out alcohol and caffeine would help. So I did.

After about two weeks I went to a sports med doc and he told me that was BS. He basically said it was arthritis and fuck it I should just keep charging down the fall line, so to speak.

Since Christmas I've had maybe 4 glasses of wine and 4 cups of coffee.  Normally I have 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day and maybe 4 glasses of wine a week. I do feel better and so does my toe, but I have no idea if they are related. I lost some weight, not sure if that is related either.

The wine I could care less about, I think. The only time I feel like I REALLY need the coffee are those 3:30 am alarms I set to drive to Plattekill.

Who drinks? Ever give it up for a while?
Listen to your Dr. If it wasn't arthritis it could be tendonitis. I have been working out pretty consistently since I was a teenager. Sometimes my elbows or shoulders hurt and I stop doing the exercises that hurt those joints. Eventually, the pain goes away. Doctors have told me at various points, it is bursitis or tendonitis - rest/ice. I have never felt the need for a cortisone shot.

I do not drink alcohol that much. I  have never had a hangover. When I was younger, I was always the designated driver and I was fine with that. I might have 1 or 2 drinks a week. I do enjoy beer/wine/single malt, but I am just not driven to have it on a regular basis. I have tried MJ, and I did enjoy it, but, like alcohol, I am just not that driven to use it. I have never tried anything else.

I drink about 2 coffees a day and but this started about a year ago. There is a lot of conflicting info about coffee, but it seems to be leaning towards positive.

Luckily, I have not had any issues with anxiety. My ex had all kinds of issues with anxiety and a load of other things, but I no longer have to deal with her issues anymore.

Re: Drinking

gorgonzola
I have tendinitis that flares up in various places - I've found cutting out refined sugars is way more effective than reducing my alcohol or coffee intake. I love coffee and beer (and coffee beer) and have a few each every day with a little bit of bourbon or maple whiskey now and then. Way better for you than soda or energy drinks!

I'm out at 65. No "One More Year" for me.  My daughter graduates from HS that year, so we'll move to a cheaper district.  The only permutation may be establishing residency in NY so she could go to a SUNY school, TBD.  Regardless I am retiring at 65.  That has always been my plan, and nobody (including social security) is moving the goal posts on me.

For a variety of reasons the consultant thing wouldn't work before I am 65.

I hope you make it.

One thing about college - it will ultimately be her decision, and don't bet on it being a SUNY. The current income cap on free state tuition is $110K combined and that does not include room & board, if you are over that she won't get it. Also - if you are planning on this you better establish NYS residency a year ahead of time. One last point, she might do better if she gave up her US citizenship and then came back as an illegal immigrant...

He’s assuming your desire to establish NYS residency so your daughter can go to SUNY school is so that you can take advantage of the Excelsior Scholarship, which (after other tuition aid) pays eligible tuition expenses, but doesn’t cover room and board and other expenses.  There are income limits ($110k agi), residency requirements (12 months), not to mention the student must live and work (if they work) in NYS for the amount of time they received the award (otherwise the aid converts to a no interest loan and must be paid back).

Politicos pushing to give Illegal immigrant children free college tuition, well.....

Ha!

Best laid plans, I guess.  I’d say I’ll be retired at 65, but I don’t know if I’ll make that goal.....given my wife’s insistence that she wants to retire at 55.  But I hope I do make it.

Don’t think he was implying you might croak before you get there, or anything like that!
