How the hell are you supposed to know how much you'll need or how long you'll live?
There are calculators for both those questions. But I would say make your plans for age 95 and count on your wife living that long as well.

Also - don’t plan on living in a van, that is unless you want your kid changing your diapers because at some point the van is not a viable option.
In all honesty, after working in a long term care unit (hospice) I wouldn’t make big life decisions based on being too worried about that. That part isn’t life, it’s shit. A lot of people basically check out long before they are dead. I guess what I’m getting at is if living in a van is something you really want to do then do it.

If you just thinking about yourself then you may be right. I prefer not to be a burden to my wife or children. If I have set up and can afford good end of life care I can check out without having to worry about my loved ones having to worry. It’s not about whether or not I can enjoy the end - it’s about not straddling my family with my care. That’s more important to me than living it up now.

I was kidding about living in a van down by the river, it's an old Saturday night live joke. I like the cabin better.

Re: Drinking

A little insight from somebody in the business. Just now, I was in a store talking to the owner when a customer came in and bought a pint of brandy- said to the cashier “I need this for a friend”. After he left the owner said “yeah right, he never buys anything for other people”. I agreed, said something like, “Right it’s portion control. I saw him unloading the delivery to the deli next door. I guess we have to trust these guys to know their limits.” Then the guy came back in and returned the bottle unopened and bought a half pint instead. This kind of stuff is VERY common. It is the one thing about this business that really surprised me when I started 20 years ago. There are a LOT of people walking around, functioning in the world, someplace between a little buzzed and who knows how drunk. So that’s all- take whatever lesson you want from it.

Stumbled across this pic a few mins ago.

Don't think it would fly with the animal rights folks in this day and age. Wonder if its JD or flat Coke in the bottle. In any event, it's apparent the chimp likes to drink.

Yes
Allen Collins on the left and Artimus Pyle,  from the Showtime movie about LS, here is the clip - it is worth the 43 seconds as Pyle describes what happened:

Great video...I didn't see the LS movie, but did know it was Allen, Artimus, and some random Jack slugging chimp. UFB.

You could switch women for men and this is still true. I know I depend on my wife and she depends on me - we are codependent

Uncool alert.

Six months later the experiment goes on.

To some extent I have slid back on coffee, 2 4 oz cups a day on weekdays and one on weekends. Still less than the 4 8 oz cups I was having before.

Still hardly ever drink.  I just don't miss it. I will still be having beers after skiing at Plattekill.

I do feel better. I guess TJ is right, I'm old.

It's pretty lame I'll admit.

With my walk to work (to, from, home for lunch) plus my after work walk (2 miles), I walk about 3 miles a day if it's not raining. Otherwise about a mile to and from work.

All I know is I go through phases where I get in a lot of exercise and phases where I get a bit less and other times when I go weeks without any at all. When I’m on the ball and make it a habit I feel better.
