Skinig has been quite good at the Peak.
Chair 5 - Mars Hill is open, but u need to take the shuttle bus to get over there... but u can ski back. Today was foggy early, then the fog finally lifted and it became sunny and warmer. Some pics from today. Sat. 1/21/17. There would not have been many people there today - but there was a huge race on Odyessay and there were ski racer kids from all over. HEY!!! That guy making bumps is one of our crew
BTW, he knows bumps ---- he's an ex-pro bumper |
I just looked at the webcam, and Alcmene looks in rough shape, as does the flat section above the Stoic.
I skied this weekend, and while Saturday was descent, Sunday was a bust. The temp. must have dipped low enough Saturday night to freeze everything up, and without any grooming, it was a rough one. Not certain what this weekend holds. I'm not motivated to make the drive to Killington, but that too could change between now and Friday. I have a feeling it may take Greek some time to recover. Such a shame they didn't build bases this year. |
There's a buzz around town that the main reason Greek Peak isn't really putting much effort into the mountain this year, is because they are purposely trying to run it back into bankruptcy again so they can get their investors together to re-purchase the mountain with the new upgrades at a discount price.
Any meat to this?

No dog in that fight other than someone that skis there. If that's the case it's a grimy thing to do. I've spoken to 4 people I know that have held season passes for years that won't be buying a pass again.
They all said the same thing which is that they can understand not the best conditions given the weather we've had the last 2 seasons PROVIDED it looked like the people involved acted like they were working as hard as they could. |

I can't say that I blame them. If you noticed, snow making didn't really begin in full force until after Christmas/New Years week. There was a reason for that, including $$$ |

Nice correction RJ. I appreciate removing speculation because I am from there and I have heard the opposite of what you originally posted. Thanks!

RJ thank you for the reply. A money issue causing an area to not turn on systems that are a part of getting the business to where more people will come to that business kind of turns into a bad downward spiral. not great conditions = fewer skiers = less money coming in to run things.
It's just unfortunate. I stopped skiing for many years and came back to it on GP. It's the hill where my son learned to ski and we like the hill quite a bit. |

Who? Do we know him?

Ethan Sorry about me being confusing in the post. I was referring to me as far as being someone that skis at GP. Sometimes my fingers don't keep with my thoughts on a subject.

That's ok. So, what you're saying is that you think Greek Peak is dropping the ball and not trying hard enough to offer a good product in spite of the weather. I used to ski there a lot before the new ownership, and the skiing was always great. Even 2012 which was a bad winter.

i would have to respectfully disagree and know the employees work tirelessly and against the weather to make sure GP is in the best shape possible for its phenomenal customers.

Greek Peak has been continuously making efforts for snow making operation since the first snowfall. Our hill team has been working around the clock every chance we have to make snow. Mother Nature has yet again been a challenge a few times this year, but the efforts have not stopped on GPs end. The rumors that are buzzing are inaccurate at best. Operationally the team has been working diligently to keep the snow we have accumulated from natural snowfall as well as from the guns. Thankfully we had some fresh powder on the mountain this morning and we hope to fire the guns back up for the remaining of the week. There has been no hold back this season and continued effort will carry on for the remainder of the season, we appreciate all of the hard work that is put in.

Great post - love the effort you have put forward.

The way I see it ,is Greek don't have the compassity to lay down snow the way they should. Not near or even close to enough snow making equipment. I was really surprised when the new owners put in that lift as apposed to upgrades into snow making capabilities. I know of many who moved on due to the lack of snow,me included. I Learned to ski on that hill and was a pass holder for 8 years. The first year of new ownership I skied more south as a paying customer, as opposed using my pass. Now this season and last I have been looking for a reason to return to no avail. I understand it's just been bad luck timing, I wish after they put that lift in they had some killer winters but not the case. Look it's real simple it's about the SNOW and trail count! I hope they get sorted out and wish only the best for them and would love to return home.

*You have less staff than last year--especially in the snow making department. *Your marketing manager went on the local news and told the public that it's costly to ski at GP. Travis would never have done that, had you not let him go. *You made minimal snow until after the Christmas/New Years week. There were many windows of opportunity to make snow that you let pass by. When you did make snow, you never built a base. I also don't believe you ran at full capacity until a couple of weeks ago, as many fan guns sat idle on the side of Alpha where they are stored. Scrundy is absolutely correct regarding the lack of snow making capacity. It should not take as long as it does to open a trail with minimal coverage on it. Because bases are not built, now guns have to be dragged back on to the same trails--very labor intense. You are more concerned about trail count--than quality or depth of snow. Ski areas up to two hours south of Greek Peak are 100%, or nearly 100% open with 2-3 foot bases. *You have only run chair 2 a few times this year. *You close every opportunity you can get. *You couldn't get Upper Mars open because you waited far too long to make snow on it. *$250 season pass in the fall, 10% bonus on gift cards, add cash to your pass. ???? *The deceptive 8% resort fee doesn't exactly create goodwill, as no other ski area in the U.S. that I am aware of charges a resort fee on anything other than lodging. **In terms of the rumors, not all of them are inaccurate... |
