Hi GPPartner. Is there any chance NYS could assist in procuring energy efficient, high capacity snow making for GP? Our governor talks a lot about supporting winter sports and energy efficiency. It seems like a good fit. If Syracuse can get a gondola that will only be used 12 days a year, GP should be eligible for some financial help that may actually save/create jobs and boost the central NY economy. A couple weeks ago, my family and I went to Bristol instead of GP simply because they had nearly all of their terrain open. Honestly, I'd much rather ski GP.
How about starting a petition... "Gondola? NO... Make it snow at GP". Thanks for taking on ownership and keeping GP a viable business. GP will always be my home hill. |

It is applied to pretty much everything (maybe someone could chime in on what it ISN'T applied to?) that is paid for while at GP. Food/beverage, season/day passes, rentals, clothing, lodging, water park, etc. I hear that they even take 8% TP back on your BM. Sh*tty. I suspect it may be listed on the menu somewhere, and it's probably on the signs for lift passes, but all-around, they've done a good job of keeping it on the DL if you don't know about it before it comes time to pay. I knew about it beforehand, and even when I get the bill for my drink, it still makes me roll my eyes. |

Just making a point that not all true resorts charge resort fees. Disney doesn't charge--nor do the dominant hotel chains in the Caribbean (RIU, Iberostar, Sandals, Barcelo, Melia, etc.) There is nobody on this forum that knows the hotel business better than I do. Plus, what ski area do you know of that charges a resort fee on lift tickets and french fries? I know of none. If additional revenue is what GP requires, invest in a top-notch marketing department. I'm also in favor of increasing prices, if necessary. We pay nearly half of what Elk skiers pay for season passes. However, the consumer will certainly expect something in return. |

There is little chance public tax dollars would be used at a privately owned ski area. With that said, there is always the possibility of receiving an energy grant, if they exist. If you recall, a marketing grant was used to build the deck off of Trax.

Mighty bold statement considering this is the IntraNetz and all. |

The energy grants Gore got came from National Grid in 2011 and required a concerted effort to deal with bureaucracy. It was a one-to-one grant, Gore (ORDA/NY State) provide $350k which was matched by the power company.

There are many things I don't know, but I am very confident in my level of expertise within the hospitality industry. I'm certainly not intending to boast. As I've said before, I know little about the ski industry, which is why I don't own a ski area. |
What did you do? Stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night? |
That actually made me chuckle out load. You have to admit, Hi Express makes a darn good cinnamon bun. |

Here's a question: if I grab tickets for me and my son on Liftopia am I gonna be asked for another 8% when I bring my voucher to the window?

GPPartner, thanks for clarifying the idea behind the new bridge. I didn't realize it was also for electrical service and that you received a grant from the town of Virgil.
The guy, Stevens Excavating, who built the bridge, lives near me and he hired me and my brother to apply the epoxy to the giant I-Beams. It was quite a project applying the primer and then two coats of this think, sticky, smelly stuff in the classic Greek Peak brown. That shit will knock you out pretty quick if you don't have tons of ventilation. It was kinda fun though. Until you clarified that grant from the town of Virgil, I was all summer trying to figure out how this project was considered a priority for GP, and I know it was not cheap!
I'll take boilerplate ice over wet snow any day

Not 100% but I don't believe so |
I agree with Camp! Unless a resort fee is disclosed prior to purchase, a business can not tack it on after the purchase is made. This is one of the aspects that got the hotel industry in hot water. |
If you click through on LIftopia for Greek Peak you will get an 8% "Tax Recovery Charge" added on before you finish checkout. Do the same at Whiteface and there is no charge like that. Didn't try any other places.

Thanks guys. I committed and saw the fee as I completed the transaction. Any tips on skiing Greek today?

Unfortunately, based on their website, it does not look like a lot is open, BUT, they did get some fresh snow last night, and they aren't the best at keeping their site up to date. If they have chair 5 open, it is worth checking out, even if you have to take the shuttle over from the main base. Often it will have the best snow when that is the case. Otherwise you can reach it down Upper Mars from chair 4. You should be able to make it back down Poseidon from chair 5, to avoid taking the shuttle back over. Trojan, also off chair 4, is a great run. It has 2 headwalls with nice fall lines, usually nice snow (watch out on skier's right though, that was a little bare/icy the other night). Carry your speed down through the second section, or you'll be doing a bit of skating. Castor is a nice easy green. If they have Zeus open, definitely a fun run. It looks like it should be getting opened up soon, but hasn't yet. Off the main quad, I like Odyssey and Fields (check out skier's right on the top). Iliad is a nice slope, but can get congested at times, and I don't find it as interesting as the other two, although skier's left on Iliad was fun the other night. Alcemene is the narrow run right under the lift. It's nice when the snow is fresh or corduroy, but if the base under it fresh stuff is hardpack/ice, I will skip it later in the day after it is skied out. Karyotis is a nice gentle green, I like to take it every once in a while and relax. At the bottom of Fields/Karyotis you have your choice of Stoic/Wendy's, Christy's, and Platonic. I prefer Stoic or Christy's. If you take Stoic, Wendy's is a little trail off that, very short, but often has some nice snow on it, a lot of people just fly by it. Try the wings & fries at Trax. They're great. Beer selection is good, too. |
