I need to be in the NE for my job. When you are retired taxes become very important in stretching your retirement savings. Depending on where my son goes to college I’ll become less hitched to the current location. I actually like the Lebanon NH area quite a bit. Lots of good skiing within a hour, Short drive to Boston and low taxes, good medical care as well with Dartmouth there.

Don't know much about Roanoke as a city. Have been in that area a few times to bike down the Virginia Creeper Trail (17 miles, all downhill on Rails-to-Trails). Southwest VA is not that well known, so the parks in that area aren't as crowded as the NC mountains during the summer. I-81 from Staunton north is what I take a lot of the time when driving from NC to NY or New England. The Charlottesville area has become a mecca for retirees in recent years. Increased housing prices a lot apparently. The Florida ski clubs do all sorts of ski trips. But a much shorter flight to the Rockies from Houston, with the possibility of driving to NM or CO ski resorts. That's the traveling ski nut perspective. ;-) |

We seriously looked at the Dartmouth area for potential retirement spot what I found the hit on investments and the high property taxes that usually offset New Hampshire's lack of an income tax . This was not a positive situation for our particular case. The property taxes in New Hampshire some of the highest in the nation. Everyone's case is different you really need to do a detailed analysis before pulling that trigger

My wife is in love with Tennessee but if that’s the way we go I’ll hopefully be fit enough to just go live in my truck all winter.

Yep getting "peopled out" it's a pretty common occurrence for a lot of managers after a couple of decades . Sounds like you could use a decent career change.
actually that was one of the reasons I left the presidency at 51 ,that plus the fact that I got tired of being a fund raiser and gripping n grinnin' 😀. so after 30 years I changed the game and got a life and opted for both sanity and fun. Change is healthy .in pulling for ya

For more skiing fun driving from TN, worth the drive over the mountains to Beech or Sugar. Open a lot longer than Ober. Helps a lot that Beech is over 5000 ft. |
We visited Ober during the summer a couple years back; I think I’ll go with my truck

Current NH resident here......and we NEED YOUR MONEY......but I might burst a few bubbles for you. I’d say within 2 hours for good skiing. Kmart and Okemo are ~ an hour. Skiway, Whaleback, and Ragged are close. The real good NH and VT skiing are further. This is how NH makes it’s money. Business profits, property tax, then our various sales taxes that still are in effect in “tax free” NH. Looking at Lebanon itself, the tax rate is $29.xx/1000 of assessed value. That’s ~ $6000 on a $200,000 house. Taxes are lower in Hanover, but home prices are higher. Leb is right in line with Plymouth, where I am. And while we are lucky to have Dartmouth Hitchcock, as a teaching hospital you will meet bright, young providers who are whip smart and on their way up. Unfortunately, by the time of your following year’s appointment, that person has moved back to Minnesota or North Carolina. So it is hard to develop long term relationships with a doctor who is familiar with you and whatever ails you in particular. I saw this with my old man’s cancer, as well as in my dermatology visits. It’s somebody new every year. NH is great, don’t get me wrong. But the “no income tax” and the “live free or die” lures people in who don’t always know the big picture. Plus.....all the massholes! |

You def need to get a Big Green Egg. These things make hacks like me appear to be good cooks. My buddy who is a professional chef gets a chubby every time he cooks on mine. |
I really want one , but just spent a 1000 beans on a new Weber gas grill..Maybe next summer

I really like Troy too, the town town is getting much better with really good bars and restaurants, a really good farmers market in the summer and the Troy savings bank theater is one of the best acoustic venues on the planet and they have a vibrant entrepreneurial scene. However I think if I were 20 I would consider it. At my age I can’t see living in a loft style apartment in town.

I have the opposite opinion. It's healthier to live in a neighbor hood where you walk every day for most stuff. That's even more important now that I can't run anymore, and it's even more true for The Woman Of My Dreams. And there's also the issue of how you live when you can't drive anymore. YMMV. mm

Forgot to lay this here for you Mountain Bikers. This large tract of private land is between the Plymouth area and Hanover/Lebanon.

I could never live in town --- I need to be able to shoot woodchucks at will |
I get that, but hunting wasn't a part of my childhood so I can let it go. OTOH I'm afraid of turning into a hermit if I live to far out in the country. YMMV. mm

Walking while pushing a wheeled basket full of stuff is not so easy when you are old. However, there is uber and deliveries for everything, including supermarket food. |
My grandmother did that at least until she was 80. You will only get old faster if you make things too easy for yourself. Plus, I'm so introverted that if I could get everything delivered I might never leave the house. That can't be a good thing. mm
