Re: Whiteface Conditions

JTG4eva!
As for conditions today......about what you’d expect given the freeze thaw bouts we’ve had the past two weeks.

I am surprised that Lower Sky is open.  Not used to seeing WF that agressive opening terrain.  You have to used crossover loop to get to the goods lower down, lots of ice.  But good on them for making it available.

Amazing how much coverage they have lost in two weeks with a couple rounds of 60 degrees.  Despite that, the head wall on Sky and the top of Mountain Run don’t look much different than they did two weeks ago, at least to me.   Icy entrance into Upper Sky, variable from there down.  Lower mountain definitely skiing better than the upper mountain.  The landscape heading up the Lookout is a bit depressing given this time last season the liftline skied incredible on natural snow.  Wilmington was better today and the winter conditions two weeks ago.  Nothing horrific, decent snow.  Was a little surprised while cruising that there are sections of Wilmington where almost half the width of the trail is gone.  Just a couple spots but that’s how much coverage they’ve lost.

All in all a good day.  Would be better if I wasn’t on shitty rental skis, but that’s another story....

Wilmington was simply awful with rocks all over the trail.  Not even close to full width in this one spot.

Skyward and the top of Wilderness and Mountain Run are not even close to having enough snow to make April.  My guess is they're so over budget on the lodge and everything that they just want to shut it all down after the racing and Canadian holidays.

Absolutely!

See, that above is where Sno and I are just of completely different thinking.  Yeah, I was cruising Wilmington at speed and coming across the section pictured was a surprise.  Yes, they’ve lost coverage.  However, that photo is not indicative of the conditions.  Wilmington skied better today than it did over Prez Day weekend.  The conditions were not great, but it was decent.  I guess I just don’t get Sno’s agenda.....

What time of day was that taken?  It looked pretty bad in the morning, at least compared to zero lines on the other lifts which is when my initial post was made.

Management is considerably better about opening LWF and I on time this year so I don't go to the bottom at all unless skiing Wilmington trail.

All in all the day was pretty good.  But I'm concerned we'll be having a very early close this season unless we start getting some serious snow.

Actually....as cra cra as it might be I’m gonna get on the Sno-wagon and bitch about management a bit.

My bad, the Thule keys didn’t make the trip with us this weekend.

So, we needed to rent. Not ideal, no. Waste of money, yes.  However, shurly they must have something decent to rent.  Well, no.

As expressed by the folks selling tickets at the desk the demo skis weren’t going out today because.....the conditions were so bad.

That kind of shocked me.  Then, on top of that, if you have to get standard rental gear it’s cheaper to rent skis/boots/poles than it is to just rent skis and poles.  Another

So, rent the standard package and just pass on the boots, it got the job done.

I did stop down at lunch, see if they had something, anything, beefier they could send me out on.  A Rossignol Experience 78 in 182cm just wasn’t enough ski to have that much fun on for a 6’4” guy at 190lbs.  Nope, nothing better will go out for the rest of the season.  Apparently they can’t satisfy the customer by providing them decent gear, which I’m sure they’ll charge a pretty penny for, for fear that a core shot, should one happen, would reduce the resale value of the demo gear.

Not the best customer service moment if you ask me, but it was still a good day!

Proves my point that coverage is ridiculously thin.

My rule of thumb typically is if you're at mid to not go to the bottom unless you know what the line looks like when LWF is right there.

I assumed that picture was taken around 3.

Hah, didn’t prove that point, given the weather challenges I wouldn’t say coverage was redicously thin.....conditions were quite good, considering.

It does support you point that some decisions are questionable from a customer service perspective.

Gawd.......did I just say that?

The skiing was decent.  They did a good job of grinding up the ice but what was are skiing on is the perma base and Sno is right - it’s crazy thin for the beginning of March.  This is what it should be like in 3 to 4 weeks not now.  Easter at this point seems iffy unless we get some snow.

I’m pretty depressed and thinking about playing golf.

Re: Whiteface Conditions

Agreed, the base is very thin, much thinner than you’d expect for the beginning of March.  What I disagree with is the ridiculous part, with what I read as Sno’s implication that WF had control over that situation.  I mean, they could have not blown Wilmington and laid down a deeper base elsewhere, but we know how THAT would have gone over!

Re: Whiteface Conditions

Blowing W Trail was the right call.  Lines would've been 45 minutes on Presidents Weekend without the extra lift.

Multiple times earlier when it was cold enough they didn't make snow, or didn't run at full capacity.  And they wasted 3 days on Lower Parkway and it never opened.  And Lower Sky was also a waste since they never blew the Ladies Drop section.  That snow should've gone on the top of Sky and Mountain Run.
