it will be an Christmas miracle if the dacks can pull off a snow event for Monday/Tuesday, overall its a terrible pattern for snow but given its late Jan the dacks don't need much.....

January has always sucked in the North East..Usually it's just dry and cold..It's all about Feb/March when it comes to snow..

But January has not exactly been dry and cold. We did have some cold windows, but we have also has a fair amount of rain, and it looks like we will finish the month with just as many days above with above average temps as below freezing temps. Leaving the overall above average.
I'll take boilerplate ice over wet snow any day

The hit parade just keeps rolling. One " warmest month ever " followed by another then another then ....

Sum total = crappy skiing

Some total, eh ?

Just in case anyone is interested, we are about to go into the Snowpocalypse 2017 out here.
What's the water level like, i.e. Lake Mead?  Are you still in a drought?  (BTW, when is a desert not in a drought?)
It's super low and with the population boom in cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas and LA I doubt one or two heavy winters will pull the south west out of a drought, it will be alleviated for a little while but humans being humans I doubt are about to curb their H2O intake. If climate scientists are correct this area is in for a serious reality check over the next 20 or 30 years. Mad Max and shit.

It is bad. Mad Max may be a good analogy RA. You can live with a shortage of many, many things but water is not one of them. Absolutely not. Things get real serious, real fast when water runs out or is severely low. There's what, 50 million people in that area ? If the water situation keeps getting worse they may have to move. Scary.

Most years the Colorado river doesn't even run all the way to the sea anymore.

Sad aspect is Fukashima is on it's way to radiating the Pacific so desalinization may not be viable to relieve the southwest's water woes in the future. Fuka-radiation is now Pacific wide (yep) and it's still spewing mass amounts of radioactive water daily with no end in sight.

Cities out there need to start recycling their waste water. There's billions of gallons right there. It's do-able.

Did/is the mountain seeing some r*in this morning?  Looks like a change to snow this afternoon.  Guess it's the grand finale on the two week thaw.

Hopefully it doesn't cause of major lock up of the surface tonight since they are reporting "wet granular"

I think it's all snow at the top and mixing at the base.  Will change to snow later.  I don't think it'll be anything some grooming can't solve, plus more snow to come into the weekend.

It's 38 and r*in in Potsdam and is trying to change to snow.
I've lived in New York my entire life.

I like the way those maps look, for conditions here at home.....but more so for the snowfall coming back into the picture for the Sierras and PNW late next week.  Going to hit either Tahoe or the PNW first weekend in Feb.  Jason, any prognostication on which might be better?  nepa, what's the word on the street out there?

As of now next weekend looks unsettled and cold for Washington. Tahoe looks to be warmer..If you are looking for freshies. Then Washington is the place.

If I am reading the maps & predictions correctly it looks like a snowy week for us. The temps are right, not too cold - we could get a nice accumulation over the next 7 days.
