The only resort more stealthy is the mega rich ski resort in Baker's Mills, nobody even knows it's there but that's where all the really rich and famous hang out when they want to ski and get away from the riff raff.

How's that golf thing going, now that we're that much further down the line? I see a toasty fire in the future.

This was an existing town owned golf course. It's a classic Donald Ross design which is why Norman was interested in being associated with it.
http://www.tupperlakegolf.com I don't see any mention of Norman on the web site but they are doing fine without him.

This was an existing town owned golf course. Coach, this IS an existing town owned golf course. And after the articles a few weeks ago it is abundantly clear that Norman will not be redoing the course in our lifetimes.

Sorry I didn't mean it in past tense
I was talking to a member at Tupper and he said the club is hurting financially as the town keeps the profits and is not reinvesting I know you posted some articles but I could read them without subscribing to the paper. Can you give us the cliff notes version Endo

Coach, I was referring to the 2 articles that were in the ADE on 8/11/16 and 8/12/16, front page detailing the ACRs difficulties, financially. Good articles that just scratch the surface. The other article was the ADEs Editorial on 8/18/16 which basically apologized for the articles(probably pressured by ACR backers to do so).
The golf course has been experiencing financial difficulties for several years now, not so much from the town not reinvesting but from declining membership and poor management form the previous Board of Directors. I hope the town board wakes up regarding the ACR but I don't have much faith, they have been drinking the Kool Aid too long. |
Endo, I just posted links to the articles plus a cliff notes digest for Coach in the other thread.

Endo I know you have not been an ACR supporter but at this point the town is pretty much all in on this and don't have much to fall back on if it fall apart. If Lawson goes belly up where does the town and ski area go from there? Wait for someone else to come along and invest? Would that start the permitting process all over again? Seems to me like you need to support the only horse in the race at this point.
I feel for the people that live in Tupper and their need for some economic boost. it would be great to have another viable ski area in the Daks so I'm hoping it works out.

From ADE article:
The question remains whether Tupper Lake's long-term success hinges entirely on the the ACR. It's not the only economic development occurring in the town and village. The once thriving lumber-hub is in the middle of a state-funded $15 million reconstruction of the village's main business district, slated for completion in November, plus $7.8 million in water infrastructure improvements on the horizon, boosted by $4.2 million in state grants and low-interest loans awarded Wednesday. A rebranding effort for the town is in development, led by the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and Adworkshop. A handful of new businesses launched this summer, and multiple revitalization grants were accepted, with several others pending approval, to benefit local businesses. APA permit stays with the land - meaning it doesn't matter who the landowner is. Sell the property you get the permit too.

I do wish that someone would just sink about $5-8 million into the mountain itself. Get a new lift, modernized snowmaking equipment, maybe some solar panels.
It's still my plan to buy it if I win the lottery. Purchase some nice snowmaking to survive the lean years, have BETA come over and help me build mountain bike trails, run it as my own personal sanctuary away from corporatized ski resorts. Unless we keep getting winters like the last one. If that happens, I'm outta here. |
I would not be surprised if ORDA doesn't put pay toilets in (including the out houses!)

we'd expected to get paid and not just in beer and free lift tickets. that place would be an excellent bike park. given its proximity to the tri lakes it could draw riders. Oak seems to be struggling even though the trails rock but they don't have the population base not that tupper is huge but within 30-40 minutes and all. I'm starting to worry about MC2... The just print free money and wanting to operate a low elevation ski hill in the northeast... what's going through that man's head... I mean for a smart guy them's not the smartest ideas...

You're just jealous that there's a local ski area where all the snow doesn't blow clear off whenever there's a gust.
I'm pretty sure my judgement is clouded by nostalgia and great memories of growing up skiing Big Tupper as a kid. |

That's pretty much the only reason this whole thing just keeps on keeping on. Man, I remember first hearing about it all some years ago, and thought, oh, how sad, they have nothing else. And that's how it will continue, and the locals who haven't left, the real diehards, will still cling to the dreams put into their heads by the carny barker carpetbaggers looking to make a quick buck. As Trump said recently, vote for me, what have you got to lose!

Coach, Trust me the town in not all in on this. I know the town needs an economic boost but to support this "horse" would be like jumping on the Titanic as it was going down. I won't re-hash it all but the proposed financing for the ACR would just add huge amount to the locals tax bills.(PILOT without any guarantee of an actual payment) I agree it would be great to have another viable ski area but Big Tupper has multiple mortgages filed against it for over $1.2 Million and now back taxes of almost $300,00. And the snowmaking system(which was the only infrastructure of any value) was cannibalized and sold off many yrs ago. The fact is the area (as a true functioning ski area) has been closed for 17 seasons and the town is still here. I agree that the winter months have seen an economic downturn without the area. I don't know what the answer is but the ACR is not it. It's unfortunate that the Town(who built it) sold it off, shortsighted IMO, should have kept it going like Old Forge does w McCaulley. Tupper Lake is a really beautiful area but as with many small towns the leadership is lacking the skill take advantage of it. They keep waiting for someone/something to "save" it. They have wasted decades, first with the Prison, now with the ACR. Time for some new leadership. |
