I support solar first as it is truly the most sustainable energy source after implementing the highest level of energy efficiency possible (insulation to the max). And there are numerous locations for wind farms in this country where it is consistent with local land use policy. So there is no need to place wind farms inside protected areas or along migratory bird paths. I agree w/ Coach on this issue. Solar for sure as wind is not efficient. It works in some locations but should not be a priority over insulation, solar and then small hydro.

Major thread drift here. On the ground in Tupper Lake very little appears to be happening as far as the ACR goes. The 500 new jobs are nowhere to be seen, the 22 new businesses that were supposedly chomping to open up in town are also nowhere to be seen. The fancy restaurant that opened in March 2014( run behind the scenes by Lawson and his wife in the building they own) closed in Oct 2014 and was totally gutted.
Now the ACR guys are applying for a new LLC to be formed at the same address( Mexican restaurant sounding name) and I'm guessing they will be applying for some type of grant $$$s claiming it to be a new venture. They also have 7 building permits showing on 3 buildings trying to show they are working, working, working. It will be interesting to see what happens at Big Tupper this winter, no news yet. Maybe those big investors will pony up a bunch of cash to operate it and pay some employees, like they were supposedly going to a couple years ago but used the lawsuit as an excuse no to fund it. As for now it still appears to be just a lot of smoke and mirrors. Lets just hope for lots of natural snow early on and through the winter so Big Tupper can open up. |
Now that pilot is not on the table I don't understand why you hate this project so much? We're you one of the protect the trees crowd of liberal NYC lawyers?

Coach, The PILOT is not off the table by any means. I'm a fiscal conservative, if this project is as great as we've been hearing for years, let the free market decide its viability, no government subsidies at all. Let Greg Norman pry open the wallet and fund it, or at least enough to fund Big Tupper. And not that it would make any difference in anything but I am not a protect member but I certainly think the Adirondacks are a unique and special place on the east coast and need to be kept that way for future generations.

Agree, The grand majority of developments are built and paid for without govt assistance. Rather, the developers are often "shaken down" by some towns or counties for extras such as money to pave roads leading to the development, money to increase the size/capacity of sewer systems not in the development, traffic lights etc and yes--indirectly or even directly build schools. Some areas around me have impact fees of 10k for every new home. Others charge anyone moving into the county an impact fee, regardless even if they are moving into an existing home.
Supply and Demand. If there is lots of demand the town can charge the developer. If there is limited demand, it appears the developer attempts to charge the town/county etc. |

On golf: I was wondering if/when a downturn may occur. I enjoy the game, but greens fees are nuts. People say skiing is expensive....my first response is "you golf" Second response is "you go to major league football games" In both cases, 3-5 events are similar in price to a season pass.
I was questioning the validity of the perspective but when it was mentioned that only 14 courses opened in 2014 and 150+ closed. That is telling. My local ski hill recently bought a golf course to help in both marketing 4 season resort and stabilize their revenue stream. OH NO.... Actually, I think this was a good move. Oddly, last week they advertised one of those 15" hole games. |

Ski gear is not cheap either
Skiing and golf are pretty similair cost wise. Just like in skiing there are many ways to lower the cost.

Oh, c'mon. Do you think spending that money will actually make you a better golfer? My ex brother in law would buy new stuff every year. It really did not help his explosive slice and crappy short game at all. But, I was there to gobble up the hand me downs at times. Best player I was paired with when I played was using maybe twenty year old clubs, and played in sneakers. Awesome iron game, though. Skiing is much more expensive, mainly because the new skis are really so much better than five year old stuff. Then there's the clothes, the winter ready car, the lodging, the food and beer, and, oh yeah, the lift tickets.

Yeah, really, just going to watch other people play a sport or play music is now into the absurd. I'm happy with my big screen and 5.1 system for baseball, because Yankee Stadium is maybe a 3-400 dollar night, with the hassle of driving into the South Bronx, and back. Recently a local venue that plays a lot of bands (old movie theatre) advertised Steve Earle, who, is like, OK, in my book, I guess, but, not 200 dollars a seat OK, if you know what I mean. Who's spending this money? Neil Young is playing up and down the east coast, but, at 200 minimum a seat. For the nosebleed seats. Please. I'll play him on Pandora.

I'm going to Neil Young at Bethel tomorrow. $54 for lawn. $6 for chair rental. Should be good and Neil personally sent me 4 copies of his new album for buying tickets.

If you are playing a 5+ yr old driver you are giving up serious yardage. I have a more compact and repeatable swing now but I hit my driver 20+ yards farther than I used to when I was younger. The ball also has something to do with this as well. Irons i don't change until I have to as I hate learning new distance control but that is not something a higher hcp player has to worry about because all they want is distance not control since little is repeatable.

Nope, never said that. You can't buy a swing....it ain't the arrow it's the Indian |
Agree you need a swing but the current technology clubs and balls are easily the equal to modern ski technology for making the game more enjoyable particularly for better players and skiers as well

The only remotely possible market for Tupper, Canada, continues to weaken as the Canadian dollar continues to lose value to the US dollar. Today's conversion is $.77CAN to $1.00US.
Canada is officially on sale for US residents. |
A couple years ago Canucks were buying up ADK land like crazy. It's harder for a U.S. Citizen to buy land in the great white north I understand.
Might be a good winter to hit a Whilster trip though.

The Saudis are killing the Canadian economy - heck, our oil patch has seen more than 100,000 layoffs of people making very good salaries. It's got to be a fire sale for McMansions in Houston right now. But this is not the market ACR is going after, they are going after the "stupid rich" market.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

The Suadis were the prime funders of the anti fracking movement as well. North American energy independence scares the crap out of them. They are dumping oil on the world market to try to reduce the threat. Now obama is stupidly making nice with Iran which has the same effect.
For now we deplete their reserves which is fine. Oil goes back to 100 bucks it's drill baby drill. We keep our reserves for the right time.
