Different Rules for Pro Athletes

It's so ridiculous the way society has different rules for athletes or other "stars."

In hockey you beat the crap out of someone and you get two minutes in time out.

Is it about the money?  If you are a huge source of income for a corporation, there are different rules?

We've now got video of Ray Rice beating his wife.  Two games or lifetime suspension?

Why the hell isn't he under arrest?  There doesn't seem to be much outrage either.

The only consolation is that with those anger issues and no money he'll probably end up jail eventually. Hopefully noone will get hurt in his next crime.

It starts in HS.  It's all the same.  Athletes getting fake grades to keep eligible.  Dodging suspensions so they can play the big game.

Life's not fair.  The sooner you realize that, the less this will bother you.  Oh, and stop watching pro sports!  I stopped years ago, people think I'm nutz... but I'd rather not support a bunch of overpaid idiots in tights.

I'm with ya Harv

I'm thankful for pro atheletes like Derek Jeter......there is still love for the "game" by some, unfortunately atheletes like him are few and far between. You know, just a damn good citizen.

Is everyone really surprised when you see the video? What did you think he did inside the elevator? He is a first time offender and he got the deal that everybody gets in this situation. He is not being treated differently than any other first time offender.

Sadly, his wife gets punished again.

He was treated under the law like any other first-time offender.  Women get beaten every day. ..where is the public outrage for them?  Oh yeah...celebrity.

I'm with Mike, don't ever look at pro sports, don't subscribe to ESPN, don't buy any of the team crap. It doesn't matter which sport, it has all gotten out of hand. Same with the music and film industries. Do something useful with your time and resources.

If you love sports and get an urge to watch them, go to the gym or to the park and play.  Watch from the 1st person.  If you want to watch and learn, watch amateurs.  They play because they love it, not because they made a career of it.

No where in our society do we have the need for professional athletes.  They are a want, and they are fueled by the fans.  If you hate the way it is, don't support it.

I dare you to say that at a lesbian rally.  People get big balls behind a computer screen.

There is public outrage everyday for physical abuse against women.  You just choose to ignore it... probably too busy watching football

WTF??? Where the hell did you go to HS

I know things have changed since I played highschool and college sports, but that certainly sounds like doom and gloom to me.

Good point. But isn't this a little different being nobody saw/knew the entire truth?? I could be wrong (usually i am) but me thinks part of this was covered up due to his celebrity status, that's the shit that bothers me.

Pretty sure his wife was not pressing charges.  NFL did not request the tape.  I bet what she is dealing with now is worse than the punch.

I wasn't aware of this story at all until yesterday and don't watch pro sports. I used to watch a lot but having a kid really reduces your time for that kind of stuff, or it did for me. I never even heard of Ray Rice.

If it's standard to get probation of whatever you call it for knocking your wife unconscious I don't get it.  Why is it a real crime to punch a stranger, but only a junior crime to punch your wife? Let's see I am really pissed of and want to punch someone. Guess I might as well punch my wife since I'll basically get away with it.

This will not end well.

But why didn't they request to see the tape. They knew what they would see, I truly think they covered it up.

The man not only punched his wife, but knocked her the fuck out!! He's no man. No man does that. Celebrity or not, that shit is sooooo wrong.

This is going to be a big deal and I hope something good comes out of it.

Yep. She was out stone cold. Limp as a ragdoll for a prolonged period of time. She likely sustained a concussion or worse.

Harv, I suspect a first time offender's punishment varies with the degree of the assault. In this case, it's easy to see it was far worse than a slap or pushing.

No, all the ones I know would rip your face off for a comment like that - or any hardcore feminist - obviously they are public who care regardless of celeb status - joking about women being beat is no joke at all.
