Re: Gore Conditions

What a frigid yet amazing weekend at Gore!  I sure hope that those of you who were there today were able to enjoy Topridge.  We were lucky enough to see that it was open early this morning and lapped it seven times.  Usually the Topridge chair is "one and done," but the conditions were so great that we kept on going.  The manmade powder was abundant and soft.  I felt like I was out West...

Grooming was excellent this morning. Unfortunately all I skied today was twister as I was doing race duty but it was just great. Looks like the snow makers will get a rest this week.

How many people were there?  I agree it sucks but it is business.  I hope to be there tomorrow and I know there will be limited terrain but I am actually blowing off a Roll back the clock day at MRG because, I will still ski more and better conditions at Gore tomorrow than MRG, without the drive (God I hope I'm right)

I skied Gore on Monday and it was great.  Lots of freshies to play in and really fun.  It was tracked up and  getting bumpy when I called it a day.

Today was the worst at Gore for an intermediate.  Virtually nothing was groomed and all that was left was heavy, tracked  crud with some areas scraped down to ice.  I saw more people in the lodge (with one day lift tickets) taking their boots off grumbling that they cannot ski it.   Those who rely on groomed trails were out of luck today.  Others were grumbling about the full price tickets and limited lift served areas.  Gore was not a happy place today.

Do you know what the management mindset was?

And now for a different view...I thought today was close to the Epi...word.  They dropped the ropes on all the glades and opened the High Peaks Chair.  I couldn't get the grin off my face and heard lots of hooting from the woods.  I only wish I could have stayed longer.  I understand the grumbling over no grooming but I absolutely love the days they decide not to.

Unfortunately a lot of times Monday and Tuesday are bare bones operations at Gore. Sometimes you can get lucky.

I'm planning to ski next Monday but am second guessing thst decision. Will be skiing with my wife so that means limited time at the summit. Darkside is really nice for us since there are nice blues to the double as well as more challenging terrain. But unfortunately that's rarely open on a Monday.

Few skiiers on Monday, so they limit operations, so fewer show up ...

I understand your enjoyment, but let's not forget that you are on the right side of the big bell curve.  The beginners to the left of the curve are happy to ski Ruby to Sunway and maybe Quick Silver.  Groomed.  But what about the top of the bell curve?  Intermediates come to Gore expecting to ski Twister and Showcase.  Take away the grooming and those normally tame hills become forbidding.  Intermediates simply cannot make their big turns in the chop.  Their only method of speed control is gone, so they become missiles with no means of avoiding the downhill skier.

I usually ski weekdays, so I understand why the masses complain about paying full price for less than half of the mountain.

I hate when people complain about trails not being groomed.

You know, when people first started skiing, there were no such thing as groomers. You had to deal with the conditions of the day. Just ski it. It will make you a better skier. If you can't ski it, take a lesson.

What is going on with this forum lately? Bitch bitch bitch, whine whine whine.

Feel their frustration, Mattchuck.  They are intermediates.  They paid for their lift tickets, too.  They had the expectation to be able to ski more than only three open groomed runs - Ruby, Sunway and Quicksilver.  I was only reporting what I heard in the lodge from the intermediates who were extremely frustrated by the lack of grooming today.

Take a lesson? A level 4-5 skier cannot go from skiing groomed Twister one day to a chopped Twister in one lesson.

Just ski it? I was almost hit by an out of control little *&^% today who was 'just skiing it.'  He was out of control, he couldn’t turn, and he couldn’t stop.  That’s MY frustration.

In addition, I asked if anyone knew what was the mindset of the management at Gore not to groom. Are budgetary restrictions going to make this a routine thing or was it the weather forecast or what?

No need to toss around insults to those who can't ski as well as you.
