Re: Gore Conditions

I think they did change their opening strategy. I also recall Gondi downloading. But now they have the high efficiency guns on the lower mountain and topridge still faces south (major project to change that). I think it's a better strategy.

I have noticed less grooming this year. I don't have data to back up my comment, but that what I see when I'm there. In the past I always thought gore did an excellent job grooming.

It is not easy to appeal to everyone. I like the previous suggestion of grooming the lower mountain and 50% of the upper. Also leave a blue or two bumped so perple can learn. North is great for this when fully open.

skied sunday and glad i waited as the snow makers had finally covered much of the iced terrain. topridge and uncus were great with new snow making. chaitmac was good. hawkeye was barebones. didn't do lies. lower mountain was very carvable. overall, big kudos to snowmaking crews. but, you could tell where there is going to be trouble if a warmup  or heavy rains happen.

on Saturday afternoon I knew that Sunday would be a Topridge day and we were not disappointed!

On another note, it feels like Gore "incredible shrinking" Mountain ready print new maps without Burnt Ridge.

Sunday was definitely the better day.  The snowmaking and grooming crews did a great job getting the mountain back into shape, much better and a lot more fun than I expected.  Really it was a lot like a "good" weekend last winter - good where the guns were blowing or had recently blown, firm and fast but still edgeable elsewhere, woods out of play.  I think it looks good for this coming weekend, esp if we get some snow Fri.  Here's my TR and pics.

The mountain was even better today. Hawkeye and lies were great. Bumps on topridge were also great. Uncas was windswept and the bumps were pretty hard. Whole lower mountain skied well.

It was really empty today. Even though they only had three lifts running, it was worth it.

If they get a foot of snow on Friday, do you think the trees and Burnt Ridge will be good to go for the weekend?  I have a voucher for magic but after comparing your TR with reports from Magic, it sounds like Gore currently has a better base in the trees, even if it is rock solid.

I drove from Saratoga to Manchester today and back, and based on what I saw over the weekend,  I believe that the ADK region has a lot more snow on the ground than VT.  This link corroborates this observation: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/nerfc/graphics/snowmaps/html/snow_depth.html.  Ultimately, the track of this storm will make all the difference for Saturday.  Sometimes the 100 miles or so between Magic and Gore can mean a lot in terms of snowfall, you can check this site for reliable snowfall amounts: http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=ALY&product=PNS

Yes, I think a foot will put much of the tree skiing back into play.  The question is whether Gore gets the foot or some lesser amount.

As for BR, I haven't seen what it looks like post-thaw.  Obviously there is some base left there, particularly on Echo.  To my knowledge the snowmaking crews have not yet been back over to BR post-thaw.  Assuming they don't get there, I'd say a foot (or even 6 inches) would likely allow Echo to re-open, but I'm not sure about Sag as there hadn't been all that much snowmaking on that trail earlier.

Tell ya what: it turns out I'll probably be up to Gore tomorrow, so I'll post another update Thurs night or Fri.

About an inch plus down. It's 14 degrees at 2000 feet and we're getting graupel. I think.

Update from yesterday.  Obviously things will be even better with the new snow, but as Freeheel and Outlaw stated the mountain has been skiing really well.  Snowmaking & grooming crews have done a great job.  Anything in the 6-to-12 range from this storm should put some-to-most of the trees back into play along with BR and Ski Bowl.

Thank you for the update.

Gore updated their site, saying 6 inches are already down.  They have also started making snow on Sagamore and Echo.  All lifts are listed as open except the Hudson chair, I hope they open it at some point so I can try out the new glades down there.

Gore was fantastic today. Snowed maybe 5 inches?  Early lower mountain runs were soft cord covered by 2 inches of ooh la la.  Top was good too. Got on Rumor first right after a short instructional session from Patrol 1.  Trails were the place to be IMO. Need more snow for true glade glory.
