Decided to expand on my last post and give folks who didn't make it to Gore a better update on overall mountain conditions.
Yesterday, after early morning rain at the lower elevations it turned to all snow on the mountain and snowed through the day. When we stopped at the Saddle for lunch, it was puking fairly hard, a welcome sight as cover, especially in the woods is thin.
The skiing was solid on the lower mountain, Twister, Showcase, both skied well. Sunway was holding the snow really nice yesterday and being on my Monoski, it was ripe for two excellent runs as I worked my way down from upper mountain terrain. Even Foxlair had decent cover passing under the Gondola where it usually gets really skinny.
Topridge and Uncas both skied good and I had one of my first and best runs on Pine Knot in probably four years. Tannery was a smooth cruiser on the Monoski with the fresh snow coming down.
Over on the Straight Brook, Hawkeye's headwall was holding snow really nice on skiers right, a pleasure to ski, as was Lies, which got a bit scraped down but still was a good run. Be careful at Lollypop Rock on Lies as they blew snow and the throat there was a bit narrow, probably felt worse due to the poor visibility. I cranked Headwaters, which always holds the snow beautifully when its snowing that thick sticky consistency, perfect Monoski run.
I was most impressed with the Dark Side. Hullabaloo, Lower Darby and all the trails on the Dark Side skied great, good cover and for the first time it was really starting to feel like winter (look above for a pic I took off the High Peaks Chair). If the weather holds out, it won't be long before the Dark Side woods will be skiable.
10 Day Forecast Courtesey of Weather UndergroundLooking ahead at the 10 day forecast, I'm focusing on next weekend and it looks like it could go either way. My bet, based on the current pattern is that it will be rain at lower elevations and snow on the mountain.
I'm planning on skiing next weekend. If it is the same weather pattern as yesterday, you are guaranteed two spectacular days of Gore. Just be prepared to get wet and soggy and bring back up gloves and goggles for the afternoon.
